I bought this DVD because I am a Patricia Arquette fan & this is one movie of hers that I have never seen. I am also a John Boorman fan and I have liked many movies that he has directed, so I felt as though I could't lose with this movie ! I wasn't dissapointed as I really enjoyed this adventure drama ! Arquette's character is traveling in Burma in the 80's during a time of political unrest. She is a doctor who has tragically lost her husband & child, and is traveling with her sister to get away from it all. Arquette's character Laura Bowman loses her passport on the street in Bangkok during a political protest rally which sparks invocation of martial law. All tourists are ordered out of the country, but Dr. Bowman cannot leave without her passport. She meets an older Burmese gentleman who serves as a guide on a long dangerous journey across the country toward safety in neighboring Thailand. Her guide is a persecuted ex-professor who explains the underlying political troubles that plague Burma as they struggle to escape pursuing soldiers in the jungle. Boorman knows how to shoot a movie with exotic scenery, and the cinematography in this movie is beautiful ! I won't spoil the ending - but the movie gives you the beautiful Patricia Arquette in an exciting adventure movie with a social conscience based on real events. I give it a hearty reccomendation !Read full review
Beyond Rangoon is one of the BEST movies I have seen in years. From the sadness of loss, the beginning the heart of the story, the beautiful filming..are just terrific. This movie captures many feelings, warmth, love, friendship, healing from pain, forgiveness, and self worth. Filming is awesome, colors beautiful and true, the acting is so real, it keeps you wanting to know what is happening next. This is why I purchased a DVD of it...from time to time I want to rewatch this movie and enjoy it over and over.
The transfer quality was horrible. At times the picture and sound were so bad I had to forward the dvd.

Superbly done movie. It is as if Patricia Arquette actually was Laura, and lived the part. Hard to believe such things are still going on in Burma. Highly recommend, it will make you appreciate your own life.
