COVID proved to a lot of companies that office work doesn’t need to occur in a physical office. This is especially true for software, where all the work occurs on computers. My point is, if you can get an internship, they’ll probably be pretty open to at least some of it being remote.

Now the big question: How to get an internship. These are really hard to get because there are so few of them. Companies generally favor two things: 1) People with the right education 2) People with a connection to the company.

  1. The right education will mean you have taken some classes in UX or a related field (like industrial design, graphic design, experimental psychology, etc.). For this you will need proof that your classes mattered and will be helpful in your career. The best way to do that is to create a “Portfolio” - typically a simple web site with a collection of your relevant work The most effective portfolios show two things: A) You did some form of research to understand your users B) You have some outcomes - either designs or research reports or something similar that demonstrates you know how to apply your research to the design phase.
  2. People with connections. Internships often go to children on parents who work there, or who have a friend, relative, etc who can refer the intern. So start looking around for people like that who work in the right places and can recommend you. Use LinkedIn and any family and friends connections you have to grow your network of people who are willing to help you.

One last tip - internships usually happen during the summer, when students are out of school. Start looking for internships very early in the year - like February - as this is when companies start thinking about filling these positions.

Since you are strictly considering a remote position, you can also search in multiple geo-locations till you find something that is an appropriate fit.

Consider that remote intern and/or entry-level roles might be tricky to find. It’s challenging to train someone remotely, but feasible through tools such as video chat and screenshare platforms. You will just have to look in each posting to see if they are willing to accept remote candidates.

One last note: DO NOT be discouraged if it takes a long time to find something or get a response. This industry is competitive and many other individuals such as yourself are seeking similar opportunities. I have over five years of agency-dense experience, and I have to send out dozens of contract applications sometimes before I get selected for a job.

A few other random thoughts:

  1. Resume - it needs to be honest and legitimate. Be sure to taper your skills/experience to match the position you are applying for.

So my biggest piece of advice would be to go into it without an attitude of "how do I make the most of it". You should just go with the flow. Work hard and meet people. Don't stop learning - on the job or off the job. An internship is an experience even if you don't do anything tangible at the internship you will learn just by observing and honestly you might learn that you hate doing what you did. Which will teach you that this is not your calling.
