First of all, I wouldn’t recommend remote work for an internship for you, or anyone, unless its the only way you can get a job. The reason is that if you work on-site, in your company's office, you will absorb quite a bit of useful information just being there - how people conduct themselves in a professional environment, happenstance conversations that occur because you bump into someone, overhearing interesting discussions, etc.

But on the assumption you somehow are getting a remote job anyway; know this: Most companies doing software these days are getting very open to remote work. COVID proved to a lot of companies that office work doesn’t need to occur in a physical office. This is especially true for software, where all the work occurs on computers. My point is, if you can get an internship, they’ll probably be pretty open to at least some of it being remote.

1. The right education will mean you have taken some classes in UX or a related field (like industrial design, graphic design, experimental psychology, etc.). For this you will need proof that your classes mattered and will be helpful in your career. The best way to do that is to create a “Portfolio” - typically a simple web site with a collection of your relevant work The most effective portfolios show two things: A) You did some form of research to understand your users B) You have some outcomes - either designs or research reports or something similar that demonstrates you know how to apply your research to the design phase.
2. People with connections. Internships often go to children on parents who work there, or who have a friend, relative, etc who can refer the intern. So start looking around for people like that who work in the right places and can recommend you. Use LinkedIn and any family and friends connections you have to grow your network of people who are willing to help you.

One last tip - internships usually happen during the summer, when students are out of school. Start looking for internships very early in the year - like February - as this is when companies start thinking about filling these positions.

I was working full time at the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office ) as a project analyst. I graduated with an international finance degree with the aim of not working in the banking industry. Personally, I prefer Job Search | Indeed for these types of searches as the platform has highly accurate filters to help you identify opportunities that aren’t just your standard FT roles. Keep in mind that you can change the search keywords to match whatever specialization you want, specifically ie: AdWords, Social Media, or Digital Marketing in general. Since you are strictly considering a remote position, you can also search in multiple geo-locations till you find something that is an appropriate fit.

Consider that remote intern and/or entry-level roles might be tricky to find. It’s challenging to train someone remotely, but feasible through tools such as video chat and screenshare platforms. You will just have to look in each posting to see if they are willing to accept remote candidates.

One last note: DO NOT be discouraged if it takes a long time to find something or get a response. I interned for a startup last semester and had a really rough time because I had to write unit tests and I had no idea how to do it. I ended up leaving it but I learnt the most important lesson in the process. Yes, that cliche "you have to fail to succeed".

I found out what I was doing wrong and I found out what I liked doing. I was really intimidated by programming a year ago because I go to Berkeley and I always think everyone around me is better. So I started working on side projects and learnt my strengths and weaknesses. A lot of my friends interned at really good tech companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft but I think none of them felt the pressure I did. For building something from scratch. My internship helped me realize how much I actually knew in programming and made me push myself to do more side projects.

So my biggest piece of advice would be to go into it without an attitude of "how do I make the most of it". You should just go with the flow. Work hard and meet people. Don't stop learning - on the job or off the job. An internship is an experience even if you don't do anything tangible at the internship you will learn just by observing and honestly you might learn that you hate doing what you did. Which will teach you that this is not your calling.
