8/9/2021 I purchase this on 11/11/2018 and it is STILL going strong and with no problems since I am more Echo savvy.Original review: This is my first Echo product and so far I’m loving it. I love the sound it puts out, the sleek and light design (compared to my other item). The only problem I had was trying to pair it through my Amazon Fire, but it was a breeze when I went online. Also happy that I could pair it to my IPhone.
I bought my first Echo (first generation) on Amazon Prime Day 2017; it didn't take me long to realize I wanted Alexa's usefulness all through my home. Now I have that original Echo, two echo Dots, and this little gem.
The second-gen Echo actually costs less than I paid for its older sibling on Prime Day! I saved even more by buying this one Certified Refurbished. Compared with my first-gen unit, I think this one sounds a bit better -- and of course it looks and works like brand-new. Nice work, Amazon.
The newer Echo offers Bluetooth audio-out, which the original version lacked; this can be useful if you want to drive a more powerful Bluetooth speaker -- but I find both Echoes plenty loud. And they sound good, too -- maybe not audiophile quality, but certainly good enough for casual listening.
The second-gen Echo also has the option of "dressing up" with interchangeable sleeves. I haven't bothered; I bough it with the look I wanted, and see no reason to change its appearance.
Of course, an Echo speaker means you have Alexa, the voice-operated assistant. Alexa works, and works well. I control lighting, get answers to questions, get music or new-and-talk, select music for listening, and more, all with my voice. My Echoes and Dots are positioned so that, wherever I am in my home Alexa can always hear me clearly and respond.
I was a little worried purchasing a refurbished unit but quickly found that was unfounded. The packaging was minimal but all parts were included and well protected. There was no evidence this unit was ever used. Setup was straightforward and I was yelling commands within minutes. Sound quality is impressive for such a small device. Music sounds fantastic throughout an open kitchen / family room area. It isn't window shaking loud but just right for party background noise or cleaning the house. Distortion is minimal with the volume nearly all the way up. The voice controllable EQ is a nice touch for customizing the sound.
Voice recognition is sensitive and very accurate, even from 30-feet away. I've found even whispering 'Alexa' triggers the Echo from a good distance. I was able to easily link my online music services, SiriusXM and smart plugs. Bluetooth also works well when I directly connect my phone. Wifi connectivity has been impressive. It remains the only device in my house that has never needed a reboot or lost connection. After almost a year, the Echo (2nd Gen) has been flawless and continues to be one of the most used appliances in the kitchen. I will definitely be adding more to other levels of the house.
Sounds great, though it's not stereo, it's great quality sound. I wish Alexa could answer more questions. We often get "Hmmmmmm ... I'm not sure about that" or "I don't know that one". It can answer about 65% or so of the questions we ask it. I hope it will improve over time. I love that it controls our lights as programmed. The app is easy to understand. Easy to set up ... we were up and running in about 10 minutes. We use Philips Hue lights with the Hue bridge, and it works seamlessly with Alexa. We also use it with an Alexa-ready plug adaptor to turn on hard-to-reach fans around the apartment. We liked it so much we purchased two more, and purchased one for my Aunt, who loves to listen to music in the kitchen with it, and uses it for timing food in the oven and on the stove. Can set multiple timers and even name them ("Alexa, set a baked potato timer for 60 minutes ... Alexa, set a casserole timer for 45 minutes"), and she'll announce what is ready when it's time. I love it. Can play music on all speakers in the house at the same time ... great when you're cleaning the house, or setting an atmosphere around the home. Price is below what it's worth. Wish I had Alexa in the car.
I bought this in '18. It works flawlessly even though I have to use the power supply from my Echo Show because I can't find the power supply for this version which is the Echo 2nd Gen. I'm not sure what happened to the power supply for this but I did discover that the power supply for my Echo Show works with this as well so it's a good thing seeings how We don't use the Echo show much and I need this speaker for my electronics studio so I can listen to music and work. I am planning on buying a new power supply for it but not going to spend 21.00 when I can get the same thing (just a different brand) for 10.00. Just saying...
