This course focuses on musical creativity, which is the cornerstone of the United States Core Music Standards. Students will be exploring music from around the world by singing, playing recorder and creating their own music through improvisation and with the multi-platform program, Soundtrap.

Course Goals

Upon course completion, students will be able to sing songs in many languages, play the recorder at a basic or intermediate level, create their own music by improvising or using the cross-platform program, Soundtrap.

 

Target Audience

This video-course is primarily intended for children - Kindergarten through 5thGrade

 

Course Requirements

Students taking this course will need have access to a recorder and parental help signing onto Soundtrap.

  

TOPICS 

Section 1 – Basics

Unit 1 - West African Introductions - Sing your name in the Liberian song, Funga Alafia, and learn something about the djembe. 

Unit 2 - The Sounds Around Us - This unit introduces the teacher more thoroughly, suggesting some reasons for his musical preferences. Students are asked to fill out a form that has them list what sounds they hear at home and what music they listen to; and what music their parents and grandparents listen to.

Unit 3 - Breathing Exercise - Learn proper breathing techniques while watching a Doberman ball expand and contract.

Unit 4 - Working with Soundtrap - Learn how the cross-platform music program, Soundtrap, will be used in this course.

Unit 5 - Soundtrap (a closer look) - This lesson takes a closer look into how to use Soundtrap.

Unit 6 – Juanito - Learn to the names of some body parts in Spanish by learning this fun song and dance.

Unit 7 - Hot Cross Buns (on recorder) - Learn the basics of recorder playing and learn to play Hot Cross Buns on the recorder.

Unit 8 - American Music - What is American Music? This unit explores what makes a piece of music "American."

Unit 9 - Car Song - Learn another great song my Woody Guthrie.

Unit 10 - The Elements of Music - This in an introduction to the elements of music according to the US National Core Music Standards.

 

Section 2 - Melody and Rhythm

Unit 11 - Sruti (Melody) in Indian Music - Learn to improvise to the Indian Raga, Yaaman.

Unit 12 - Tala (Rhythm) in Indian Music - Learn some rhythmic patterns in Indian music.

Unit 13 – Ramayana - Hear Dr. Bob tell the epic Indian story of how the light conquered the darkness.

Unit 14 - The Diwali Song - Learn the Diwali Song in Hindi.

Unit 15 - Balinese Kecak Money Chant - Learn the interesting rhythms of the Balinese Kecak Monkey Chant. Learn to improvise your own vocal rhythms using the stereo delay effect on Soundtrap.

Unit 16 - Grizzly Bear - Learn a crazy dance to go with the Grizzly Bear song.

Unit 17 - Native American Music - Learn about two modern Native American forms of music. Also, learn to sing the Mvskoke Duck song.

Unit 18 – Ushkana - Learn to relax while singing this Native American lullaby.

 

Section 3 - Form and Expression

Unit 19 - Western New Music - Learn how sounds are sculpted by contemporary composers to form music in the same ways sculptors use clay to create beautiful forms. Learn how to make your own avant grade music.

Unit 20 - Romantic Music - Learn about how Tchaikovsky used a Russian folk song in his Symphony No. 4. Learn to sing and play the song on recorder.

Unit 21 - The Great Big Enormous Turnip - Do a great yoga exercise while you act out the story by Tolstoy called "The Great Big Enormous Turnip."

Unit 22 - Classical Music - Sing Mozart's Alleluia with Dr. Bob.

Unit 23 - Baroque Music - Clap a special rhythm to music by Henry Purcell, using a pattern of colors as your musical notation.

Unit 24 - Early Western Musical Notation - Learn about how and why Western musical notation was developed.

Unit 25 - Merry It Is - Learn a song that was sung in England during the 12th century.

Unit 26 - West African Music - Learn about West African polyrhythms and learn how to do them with your friends and family.

Unit 27 - Long Come Uncle Jesse - Learn an old African American song that foreshadows rock and roll.

Unit 28 - Mumble Grumble - Learn to improvise the blues on recorder and/or sing the blues song, Mumble Grumble.

Unit 29 – Rap - Learn a rap song and/or make up your own, using a beat from Soundtrap.

Unit 30 – Naima - Turn out the lights and relax to John Coltrane's Naima.

 

Section 4 - Harmonics and Pentatonics

Unit 31 - Name That Instrument - Learn how timbre helps you tell the difference between the sound of a trumpet and the sound of a flute.

Unit 32 - Harmonic Singing - Learn how to find the different harmonics by changing the timbre of your own voice.

Unit 33 – Pentatonics - Learn to improvise with a pentatonic scale by playing only the black keys on a piano keyboard.

Unit 34 - Wo He Ni - Learn to sing the Chinese song that was sung at the Winter Olympics in Beijing and/or play it on the recorder.

Unit 35 – Arirang - Learn to sing the Irish song, Home by Barna.

 

Section 5 - St. Patrick's, Cherry Blossom Festival and Cinco de Mayo

Unit 36 - Home by Barna - Learn to sing the Irish song, Home by Barna.

Unit 37 - Kaeru No Uta - Do some challenging frog moves while singing the Japanese frog song.

Unit 38 - Japanese Shakuhachi - Learn about the Komuso monks and the history of the instrument they play.

Unit 39 – Sakura - Learn to sing the classic cherry blossom song in Japanese.

Unit 40 - Kuma San - Sing the Japanese version of the Teddy Bear song: Honorable Bear.

Unit 41 - De Colores - Celebrate diversity with this song about colors from Mexico.

Unit 42 - Kid Yoga Class - Have fun doing a yoga class using songs and moves you learned in this course.

Throughout my life I have juggled a number of activities. I have performed internationally within a variety of musical styles, including avant grade classical, orchestral, Eastern Indian, Balkan, Klezmer...music. I am a life-long learner who has done extensive research into world religions, yoga and world literature, which has led to me teaching liberal arts courses at Thomas Edison State College. I have been teaching music to children forever 30 years and I am currently publishing a book entitled, Musicing Around the World, through Oxford University Press. The book addresses the context for the material presented in this course.
