INTERIOR REMODELING PANTONE COLOR TRENDS FOR 2021

Every new year is the start of something brand new–bringing with it a breath of fresh air, along with a palette of bold new paint color trends. If you love decorating your home and keeping up-to-date with all the latest interior design trends, then you will surely enjoy the simplest decorating task of all: repainting your space with a fresh coat of pain in the shade of the pantone of the year. Doing so will completely transform the vibe and aesthetics of your home.

2021’s Colors of the Year: Illuminating & Ultimate Gray

Over the last few years, minimalism has become one of the cornerstones of interior design. And by the looks of it, that is not going to change anytime soon. However, homeowners are gradually changing their approach on minimalism.

Instead of keeping rooms cold and silent with neutral and monochromatic colors, 2021’s color trends are shifting towards rooms with a splash of warmth and humanity.

Pantone announced that its 2021’s colors of the year are Ultimate Gray and Illuminating (yellow). These shades are chosen for their warmth and dependability. The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude.

After all, the vibrantness of sunny yellow makes you happy and gray is the perfect neutral color to go alongside it. Such a combination gives the room a feeling of subdued sunniness that gives you a place to retreat from the fast pace of modern life for some much-needed peace. If you are preparing a decor upgrade for your house, it is a great time to consider including these two colors in your home’s present palette.

Illuminating (13-0647)

It is no secret that the events of 2020 that persist until now are quite grim, especially the millions of lives lost in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence it is only fitting to choose a cheerful and vibrant yellow as the color of the year as its aspirational nature gives us hope. Despite the tragedy we endure, we need to feel that everything is going to get better and brighter eventually – this is essential to the human spirit.

Illuminating has a bright and cheerful yellow shade that is sparkling with vivacity. It is a warm yellow shade imbued with solar power that will chase the blues away. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warm and optimistic, this color is a representation of strength and positivity.

It is a color that encapsulates deeper feelings of thoughtfulness with the promise of something sunny and friendly. If you are thinking of repainting or redecorating your home, this color is a cheerful choice.

Ultimate Gray (17-5104)

Ultimate Gray is a sophisticated gray-white mix which appears impenetrable and bleak. In a way, it is a reflection of the dark and unfortunate events that are happening in our world nowadays.

In contrast with the sunny and vibrant Illuminating, Ultimate Gray is a bit subdued and neutral, which is a perfect complementing color. This bleak tone encompasses the seriousness of ongoing struggles like the Black Lives Matter movement and stay-at-home orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

When paired with the vivacious Illuminating, it sends the message that things may seem bleak now, but there is always hope at the end of a difficult year, especially with the announcement of successful creation of vaccines against COVID that are now ready to be distributed over the coming months.

Like pebbles, Ultimate Gray is emblematic of solid, dependable, and everlasting elements which provide a firm foundation. This shade carries a surprising amount of depth and coolness. Thus, making it a perfect color to accent your floors and cabinets.

You can even use it in a few accents and decorations to prove that there’s more than one way to do grayscale. Set the mood in your bathroom by choosing this shade of gray that blends well with the vibrant Illuminating yellow.

Ingenious Ways to Decorate with Pantone’s 2021 Colors of the Year

Illuminating and Ultimate Gray–two contrasting and sophisticated colors–balance each other beautifully. If you plan to keep your home’s interior design up to date with 2021’s trend, here is how you can incorporate these trending colors into your home:

Update the Bathroom with a Fresh Coat of Paint

Use Pantone’s colors of the year to update your bathroom with a modern look interior design. Ultimate Gray looks gorgeous as a bathroom paint color, on a backsplash, or as floor tile. Then, contrast it by adding in splashes of vibrant yellow.

Use Illuminating’s shade in deciding the colors of the rugs, hand towels, and countertop accessories in the bathroom. For added contrast, opt for a gray paint color that is a few shades darker to make the yellow accents really pop.

Accessorize with Yellow

To brighten and add personality to your personal space, layer in yellow accessories throughout the room. Start with a base of gray shade on cabinets, walls, countertops, or tile treatments, then introduce yellow in smaller ways through accessories and accents.

These colorful accents can be as simple as yellow throw pillows, figurines displayed on open shelves, or a touch of yellow on textured and patterned curtains. Accessorizing offers a simple way to try out Pantone’s colors of the year without going all-in on new gray and yellow-colored furniture right away.

Shades of Optimism

Pantone’s Illuminating shade of yellow is the perfect happy color that can brighten up the doldrums left by 2020. Meanwhile, the subdued Ultimate Gray is a perfect contrast to make the yellow really pop out. When redecorating your space to incorporate the use of these two complementing colors, it is best to use gray for the base color then accessorize with splashes of yellow.

If you have a tiled bathroom and you would like to make its color into the shade of Ultimate Grey, you do not need to rip out the tiles and install a new one. In fact, you can readily change the color of your existing tile via tile refinishing. If you require such services, we will gladly help!

A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE ON HOW TO PROPERLY CLEAN AND MAINTAIN YOUR TILES AND GROUTS

Tiles are a timeless classic when it comes to bathroom flooring, and even walls because of its immense durability. However, the same cannot be said for grouts. These tiny crevices usually get dirty quicker than any other parts of your bathroom. And if the grouts look dirty, the tiles tend to look dirty too.

Grout is used as spacing between the tiles to bind them together, prevent chipping or cracking, and it keeps out water from seeping underneath the tiles. It is a combination of cement, sand, and water. Given its composition, this mixture is porous and it absorbs liquids very easily.

Not only that, this spacing between the tiles also accumulate dirt, grime, and sometimes, even nasty molds. And although the grout do not usually make up much of the bathroom, they are most noticeable when dirty. And sometimes, the grout may not be even dirty – it only looks like it is because it has absorbed liquids that make it look dirty.

How to Clean Tough Grout Stains

Grout–especially light-colored ones–needs to be deep cleaned every four to six months for it to stay looking like new. However, in extreme cases where the grout is in such a bad state because it was neglected for a long time, the only remedy may be to re-grout.

Fortunately, more often than not, old grout can be salvaged and renewed as there are myriads of ways to clean your old grout such as the following techniques:

Method 1: Baking Soda, Ammonia and Vinegar

This mixture uses household chemicals that are safe and easily accessible. The combination proves to be effective when combined with thorough scrubbing.

You will need:

  • 7 cups of warm water
  • 1/2 cup of baking soda
  • 1/3 cup of ammonia
  • 1/4 cup of vinegar
  • Large bucket
  • Stirring rod
  • Sponge or spray bottle
  • Small brush or old toothbrush
  • Towel or rug
  1. Wipe the tiles and grouts to make sure it is clean and free from other debris.
  2. Fill a bucket with warm water, then add the baking soda, ammonia, and vinegar. Stir to combine.
  3. Dip a sponge into the mixture and apply a liberal amount of the cleaner mixture to the grout. Alternatively, you could also use a spray bottle. Then, allow the mixture to sit for several minutes.
  4. Using a small brush or old toothbrush, scrub the grout with all your might. If the grout still does not come clean easily after relentless scrubbing, apply more of the homemade mixture and allow it to sit for another hour.
  5. Scrub the grout again until it comes out clean.
  6. Rinse the treated area and wipe dry with a towel or rag.
  7. To keep it clean for longer, apply a high-quality grout sealer after the tiles and grouts completely dries.

Method 2: Lemon Juice or White Vinegar

If you want to opt for cleaners that are not harsh chemicals, use lemon juice or white vinegar. Both of these chemicals are mild disinfectants that get rid of grout stains naturally.

You will need:

  • 1 cup Lemon juice or white vinegar
  • Small brush or old toothbrush
  • Towel or rug
  1. Wipe the tiles and grouts to make sure it is clean and free from other debris.
  2. Pour lemon juice or white vinegar and let it saturate the dirty grout lines.
  3. Allow the lemon juice or vinegar to sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Then, scrub the area with a small brush or old toothbrush.
  5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 as often as necessary until the dirty stains are gone.
  6. Rinse the treated area and wipe it dry with a towel or rag.
  7. To keep it clean for longer, apply a high-quality grout sealer after the tiles and grouts completely dries.

Method 3: Oxygen Bleach

You will need:

  • 2 gallons of warm water
  • 3 tablespoons powdered oxygen bleach
  • 2 gallon bucket
  • Spray bottle
  • Small brush or old toothbrush
  • Towel or rug
  1. Wipe your grout lines with a rag and make sure it is clean and dry before proceeding to any steps.
  2. Combine warm water and powdered oxygen bleach in the bucket.
  3. Mix it together until the oxygen bleach powder dissolves, then pour it in a spray bottle. This non-toxic, fabric-safe cleaner removes grease and stains with minimal scrubbing.
  4. Spray or pour the solution onto the dried grout until it floods the grout lines.
  5. Allow the mixture to sit for at least 15 minutes. Take note that the longer you wait, the better your results will be. The oxygen ions in the bleach will continue working for up to six hours.
  6. If you notice that the grout has completely soaked up the cleaning solution at any point, apply more.
  7. Once soaking time is up, scrub the grout with a small brush or old toothbrush.
  8. Rinse the treated area and wipe dry with a towel or rag.
  9. To keep it clean for longer, apply a high-quality grout sealer after the tiles and grouts completely dries.

Method 4: Steam Cleaners

Steam cleaners are the power tools that are effective for cleaning stubborn grout dirt. They make quick work of an otherwise tedious job that requires a lot of scrubbing. Steam cleaners heat water to more than 200 degrees Fahrenheit, then directly blast the steam out the nozzle and onto the grout.

The nozzles can also hold special nylon or brass brushes made specifically for grout cleaning, so you can scrub while you steam.

You will need:

  • Broom and mop
  • Steam cleaner with grout brush attachments
  • Sponges or rags
  1. Clean the tile by sweeping away the dirt, grit, and excess gunk that will only hamper your steam-cleaning efforts. For floor tiles, sweep and damp-mop the tile. For walls, sponge-clean the tiles, using a mild detergent, if desired, then rinse.
  2. Set up the steam cleaner by filling it with water. Then turn on the unit and set it to steam, as directed by the manufacturer. Wait for a few minutes as the steamer creates the steam.
  3. Attach the hose to the steam cleaner then choose an appropriate brush for the size of y◘our grout and the type of tile. As a general rule, it is best to start with a nylon-bristle brush, which is effective on most grout and will not damage the tile. If necessary, you can use a brass-bristle brush for stubborn dirt. Just know that brass brushes may damage some types of tile.
  4. Turn on the steam with the recommended rate of spray. Scrub the grout directly with vigorous back-and-forth strokes. If you are cleaning walls, work from the top, down to the bottom.
  5. After scrubbing for some time, rinse and/or mop or sponge of each cleaned section. It is important to clean up the dirty water before it settles back into the grout and dries.
  6. Refill and reheat the steamer as needed, and continue the same process until the job is complete.
  7. Finally, give it a final cleaning with a damp mop. Then dry it with a rag.
  8. To keep it clean for longer, apply a high-quality grout sealer after the tile grout completely dries.

How to Keep Your Tiles Clean

Depending on the quality and finish of your tiles (glazed vs unglazed), maintaining clean tiles is not that hard. Modern tiles are made with a glazed finish that keeps it glossy while protecting the stone beneath. If your tiles are not glazed, it would be a bit harder to maintain it.

As such, it is best to apply some sealant for durability and easier cleaning.

Ceramic tiles, on the other hand, do not have high porosity. This means that it is not easy to stain as long as you clean the mess within a reasonable amount of time. Meanwhile, granite tiles are highly porous, which means they stain easily.

Hence, you have to quickly clean the area to prevent staining. Lastly, porcelain, which is among the most popular tile materials, has low porosity like ceramic tiles, which means it also does not stain easily.

To clean your tiles, simply:

  1. Clean up loose debris via sweeping or vacuuming it.
  2. Clean the tile with mild detergent and water using a rag or chamois-type mop. Be sure to change the water frequently while mopping because using dirty water will result in a murky, cloudy floor.
  3. If you find any discoloration, scrub it with a rag soaked in mild cleaners.
  4. Dry the tiles using a rug or mop. Do not let your glazed tile floors air-dry as the sitting water will form water spots.

While the mentioned steps in cleaning and maintaining the tiles and grout lines are easy enough for a DIY project, nothing beats the work of professionals. If you do not have time to spare or you simply want to leave the job to the experts, feel free to contact us and we will make sure to make every inch of your tiles and grout lines gleaming and sparkly clean.

SMART LIVING: TOP 5 MODERN IDEAS FOR YOUR SMART BATHROOM

With the advent of modern technology, living is becoming easier and more convenient–all thanks to brilliant inventions that reduce the need to exert effort to accomplish tasks.

For instance, with the introduction of smart bathroom appliances, it is possible for you to wake up in the morning and find the bathroom floor already warm, the shower water is already at your ideal temperature, and your favorite wake-up song is playing automatically in the background.

These are not merely musings from a science fiction movie, it is indeed possible with the following smart bathroom gadgets.

1. Smart Showers

With smart showers, you can set your preferred water temperature and it will automatically adjust it for you so that you can bathe in just the right warmness of water. Hence, it is time to say goodbye to the times where showering is either too freezingly cold or scaldingly hot.

On top of that, you can also play music straight from the shower. How cool is that? And to further amplify the showering experience, some smart showers incorporate chromotherapy lighting to add a zen-like dimension to your bathroom.

Smart showers work by updating your shower routine with the help of modern technology. With just a few clicks and taps, you can activate the built-in smart bluetooth speakers, which would allow you to blast some funky music, or catch up on the news or your favorite podcast.

Setting the perfect temperature and flow rate is also a piece of cake with the use of the remote or accompanying mobile application. Also, if you want a specific routine such as a three-minute power shower followed by 30 seconds of intense cold water it would pose no problem for the digital showers.

Say goodbye to minutes wasted on fiddling with the shower just to get it at the right temperature–thus freeing precious moments in your daily routine.

You can also take the mood to a whole new level with an LED shower head which uses temperature-guided colours. This means you won’t have to deal with cold and rude awakenings as the water heats up.

Simply watch the colours turn from blue to purple to red before leisurely stepping in to ensure that the water is already heated.

2. Smart Taps

Similar to digital showers, smart taps use the power of technology to give you a wide range of control over the customization of lighting, heating, flow rate and water temperature.

Smart taps can be installed anywhere with running water–be it in the shower, bath or sink taps. One of the benefits of converting your boring taps into a smart one is that it can help save precious time.

These smart gadgets could be crucial to free up time from your morning schedule as this allows you to remotely draw the perfect bath, so it is ready the moment you step through the door.

To top it off, these smart taps can be integrated with smart devices like Amazon’s Alexa and Google Home, which would allow you to use voice command technology to set up your perfect bathroom.

Imagine, you would not even have to lift a finger, just utter your command and it shall be done within seconds.

Another advantage is that smart taps can help lower costs and reduce your ecological footprint. After all, these devices keep track of your water consumption, which can help you evaluate your routine and save you money by reducing usage.

Some smart taps also come with infrared sensors which prevent water wastage by automatically turning off the tap when not in use.

3. Smart Mirrors

Perhaps one of the most annoying occurrences when taking a steamy bath is when you need to use the bathroom mirror but you have to wipe it down first because it is all fogged up.

Wiping the mist away certainly takes time and effort, not to mention, it will ultimately leave a trail of droplets that will dry and mark the mirror in the long run. However, with the invention of smart bathroom mirrors, such concerns are nothing but a thing of the past.

These gadgets come with insanely convenient features including LED backlighting and built-in demisters.

Some of the other mirror-related technology innovations in these smart bathroom mirrors include motion-detector software that automatically turns on the backlights of the mirror upon detection of movement.

It also has touch-screen technology, in-mirror speakers and far-field microphone for any voice commands. On top of that, it has waterproof remote controls and integrated plug sockets and charging points for shavers and electric toothbrushes. What more could you ask for?

If that is not enough for you, you can also turn your smart mirror into a second computer screen so that you can get today’s weather updates while you do your make up. You can also read the traffic updates while you shave and get up to speed with the latest news headlines while you brush your teeth.

Best of all, you can also watch your favourite online tutorial on makeup and follow the instructions in your LED backlit mirror. Or, for the ultimate indulgence, position the screen to face the bath or shower and watch your favourite TV show while having a soak.

4. Smart toilets

Of course, as far as bathroom technology goes, the invention of smart toilets will allow your toilet to do a lot more than just flushing the impurities you excreted. From heated seats perfect for cold winters to motion-sensitive lids that will automatically open and close to help you prevent the spread of germs, these smart gadgets have a lot to offer.

It also comes with a dedicated spraying system with customizable water pressure and temperature so that you can wash your private parts with just the click of a button. If this isn’t the epitome of convenience and hygiene, well, we don’t know what is!

5. Whirlpool and Hot Tubs

Craving for a full 5-star spa treatment at home? Install a 250-liter whirlpool bath at home and make your bathroom sizzle and steam to your satisfaction. It could either be a luxurious corner bath or a large five-corner suite with over 20 adjustable water and air jets.

One thing is for sure though, it will bathe you in soft bubbles and fragrant splashes of water that will inevitably massage and melt your stress away. These jets can be also be fully customised, including its location and pressure.

As a bonus, when you fit this with a smart tap, it can provide the ultimate bathroom luxury of convenience and relaxation. Just command Alexa to start running the bath and step in once done.

WHAT CAUSES COUNTERTOP CRACKS AND WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?

Although bathroom countertops are not usually subjected to much use and abuse, over time, it would inevitably get countertop cracks or chipped. When this happens, the first thing you have to do is to diagnose what caused such damage and avoid doing it repeatedly.

This information is vital in determining which type of materials are required to get the job done appropriately. Only then you can begin the process of your countertop cracks repair.

Is it a Fissure or a Crack?

The first thing you’re gonna wanna do is to examine the countertop damage and determine whether it is a fissure or a crack to know its cause.

Fissures are naturally occurring in many types of stones used in countertops. This term is used in the stone industry to describe a visible separation along the crystalline boundaries that naturally occur in the stone.

Oftentimes, a fissure does not necessarily go through the entire depth of the stone and it is very narrow. For reference, it is so narrow that you can’t push a key into it. Fissures can appear straight, although keep in mind that they occur naturally along the natural crystalline structure of the stone, meaning these are not induced by installation. Lastly, fissures often occur in more than one place.

On the other hand, cracks result from stresses from handling, fabrication, transport, or installation. Usually, cracks go through the entire depth of the stone more commonly than fissures. It is also potentially wide enough to insert the tip of the key.

Note that cracks are often localized in or around areas of stress such as where the countertop opens up for the sink. It also tends to show up on and around supports. Cracks also typically follow a more or less straight line.

Another way to tell if it is a fissure or a crack is to run your fingernail or a car key across it. If it is smooth, it is more likely a fissure. Meanwhile, if it is rough and it catches your nail or car key, it is most likely a crack.

What Causes Countertop Cracks?

Now that you know the difference between a crack and a fissure, it will be so much easier to find the cause. If it is a fissure, you know that it is naturally occurring. But if you determine that the damage is indeed a crack, it is time to identify what is causing it so that you can remedy it accordingly.

Lack of Integrity or Support

Sometimes, countertop cracks are due to structural integrity reasons. For instance, if there were improper or inadequate supports for the counter upon installation. If that is the case, then the root cause has to be fixed first before repairing the countertop itself.

However, if the cause of the crack is something more superficial, the fix is going to be much simpler.

Hard Blows

Although most materials used in countertop are guaranteed to be durable, hitting it hard with a heavy object can cause a crack, especially if it happens often.

Weight

Just like a hard blow, placing a lot of weight on the countertop could also lead to a crack. Hence, you should be mindful of any excessive weight you place on top of your countertop.

Improper Shimming

It goes without saying but it is extremely important for your countertops to be installed on a level surface. Unfortunately though, many homes, floors, walls and cabinets aren’t always level. If countertops are situated in an unlevel area, this can lead to cracking.

Thus, it is vital to shim areas to ensure that you have a perfect base for your countertop installation.

Extreme Heat

Constant exposure to extreme heat for an extended period can cause cracks to form on your countertop.

How to Repair Countertop Cracks?

Generally, solid surface counters are the easiest to fix. On top of that, the results of the repair are usually less noticeable. You can use color matched adhesives to fill the crack and when sanded down, the crack will be nearly imperceptible.

On the other hand, granite and quartz countertops are a bit trickier to repair on your own because their patterns make the repair areas more conspicuous. For best results, it is advisable to hire professionals to repair it.

They will use a color-matched epoxy to fill the crack, then they will sand it down or polish it to perfection. Depending on their skills and experience, professionals charge anywhere between $200 and $600 for these types of services.

Of all the countertop materials, laminate countertops are the most difficult to repair. Although they are the least likely to crack because of their wood substrate, if they do get damaged, you can fill the seams or gouges with putty and paint it to match the rest of the slab.

Usually, though, most homeowners opt to replace the entire countertop because moisture can seep through the crack and disintegrate the wood substrate over time.

Our Advise:

Use a clear resin, epoxy, or acrylic adhesive to repair small cracks and fissures. We recommend products such as Lamlock Infiltrating Epoxy, LiquiGlass, and Tenax Tefill Kit if you intend to repair the cracks on your own.

LiquiGlass is a fast-setting clear epoxy that dries in one minute into a glass-like material that is very hard and clear. It is also permanent and UV stable. On the other hand, Tenax Tefill kit is a great product that comes in a complete kit with everything you need to fix small holes and chips in stone.

It comes with two viscosities of resin and along with a spray-on catalyst to dry the resin. After spraying the resin with the catalyst and allowing it to dry, take a razor blade and scrape off the excess from the surface. Unlike LiquiGlass, the Tefill Kit is neither a permanent glue nor is it considered UV stable.

Finally, Pectro is a resin based color enhancer that can be used to fill voids, and can help to enhance lighter shades found in cracks and fissures to help them to match the polished surface of the stone.

However, you must keep in mind that these products are for minor repairs only, and should not be used for any structural bonding.

But if you don’t want to repair it yourself, feel free to leave the job to the professionals. JW Toms River Tub Reglazing & Refinishing offers all-around services involving bathroom countertops, tubs, and everything in between. Feel free to contact us at (848) 227-9003 and we will help you with all your repair concerns.

PLUMBING 101: HOW TO CAULK SHOWER AND BATHTUB TRIM

Everyone understands the need to caulk the long seams between the wall and the edges of a bathtub/shower pan, or along the rails of a shower door. However, most people often overlook the smaller seams around escutcheon plates and the various rings or caps concealing the holes where plumbing pipes or faucet valves come through the wall.

Though often ignored, caulking these joints are absolutely vital because otherwise, water can easily seep within them and into the wall. If this happens, the stagnant water in the wall can lead to mold growth, rotting, and it may even leak into the ceiling or floor cavity below the shower or tub.

As for the best caulk to use in a shower, it is definitely a silicone caulk as it is designed for plumbing applications. It has good adhesive properties and it will not only seal cracks, but also hold trim pieces to the wall.

This caulk is often sold in full-size tubes designed to fit a caulk gun. But if you are looking to caulk trims, a smaller squeeze tube will make it easier to apply the caulk. It is best to get caulks with mildewcide as this helps prevent discoloration due to molds, which is almost always a problem in most bathrooms.

Equipment and Materials You Will Need

  • Clean rags
  • Putty knife
  • Utility knife or oscillating tool
  • Materials
  • Bathroom cleaner
  • Pure silicone caulk tube containing mold and mildew prevention additives
  • Caulk remover
  • Masking tape
  • Mineral spirits
  • Paper towels

Procedure

Step 1: Clean the Surfaces

  1. Identify the areas you will caulk and clean it thoroughly. Use a strong brush to scrub the grout. If you are replacing old caulking, remove all of the old caulk and clean the surface thoroughly.
  2. Then rinse the area and dry it with a clean rag. Alternatively, you can use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process. Make sure to remove all water in the crevices. It has to be absolutely dry. Caulk adheres best to a clean surface, so make sure that the walls and trim are completely clean and dry.
  3. Clean the surfaces one last time with mineral spirits and dry it once again.

Step 2: Prepare the Caulk Tube

  1. Be sure to cut the right size for the opening on the applicator tip of the caulk tube as this is the secret to a neat application. Keep in mind that the lower down on the tube you cut, the larger the opening and the caulk bead would be.
  2. For the trim, a 1/4 to 3/8 inch bead is good enough. You can wipe down the bead to whatever size you like.
  3. To cut the applicator tip, remove the cap and use a sharp utility knife to cut off the tip at a 45-degree angle. Some caulk tubes even come with markings on the tip indicating where to cut for various bead sizes. Follow this guide if your tube has it.
  4. The caulk will be easier to apply if it is slightly warm. Hence, you can warm the tube by holding it between your hands for a few minutes, or by soaking it in warm water before cutting the tip of the tube.

Step 3: Apply the Caulk

  1. Apply two layers of tape opposite each other. The gap between the two dictates how thick or thin the caulk lines will be. Applying tape will ensure that your resulting caulk will be straight.
  2. Place the applicator tip against the shower surface at a 90-degree angle.
  3. Apply a small, uniform bead of caulk all the way around each part of the shower trim. It is important to cover the whole seam because water can leak through even the smallest gap.
  4. Keep in mind that it is important for you to caulk the following shower and tub trim parts to prevent water leak:
  • Tub spout
  • Faucet handle escutcheons
  • Shower valve escutcheons
  • Bathtub drain overflow plate
  • Showerhead trim (Caulking this part is optional as this area usually isn’t prone to much water intrusion. But if you want to be safe than sorry, caulking this part too is fine.)

Step 4: Smooth the Caulk Bead

  1. Immediately after applying the caulk, use a wet finger or a damp rag or a sponge to smooth out each bead of caulk. Keep in mind that the goal is to leave a small, neat bead that still fully covers the gaps around the trim. Be sure to be quick when doing this step as the silicone caulk becomes less spreadable pretty quickly, although it takes a long time to fully dry.
  2. Let the caulk cure as directed by the manufacturer. You will see this information in the label of the caulk tub. However, for reference, most silicone caulk usually dries for 24 hours before it is ready for heavy contact with water.
  3. Finally, remove the tape and there you have it. Neat, straight lines of fresh caulking!
  • It would depend on your personal preference how much caulk will be wiped away. Some people like to leave fairly large caulk lines which are definitely more conspicuous. For this reason, small, thin beads usually look better as it is less noticeable. Take note that a thin line of caulk is just as effective as a large one as long as there are no gaps.

PLUMBING 101: HOW TO REMOVE A TUB DRAIN IN YOUR HOME

If you are planning to replace your bathtub or if your drain fitting is already severely corroded and needs replacement, learning how to remove a tub drain is a necessary plumbing skill you must have.

The drain fitting is a metal basket-like piece that has a lip or flange at the top and a body with threads on the outside. It is screwed into the elbow of a horizontal length of pipe that extends toward the end of the tub, and is ultimately tied into the drainpipe assembly.

Inside most drain fittings, there are two metal crossbars forming an “X”. This is placed to prevent items from falling into the drain. These crossbars are also what make it possible to remove the drain using tools like a plug wrench or pliers.

A plug wrench is a small wrench that is milled to fit the crossbars of two or more different sizes of drain. It is a handy tool to have, especially if you expect to remove your tub drain more than once.

Meanwhile, pliers are the best substitute if you don’t have a plug wrench. It is a set of needle-nose locking pliers that are small enough to reach into the drain and through the cross. Once the locking pliers are secured, use a pair of standard pliers to turn the locking-pliers and loosen the drain.

But if your drain does not come with a crossbar, you will need to use a tub drain extractor. It has a conical shape and helical knurls that grip the metal wall on the inside of the drain fitting.

Ready to remove your tub drain? Here are the tools and equipment you will need:

  • Small, flat-head screwdriver
  • Plug wrench
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Locking needle-nose pliers
  • Standard pliers
  • Rags

Step 1: Remove the Tub Stopper or Screen

The first thing you will have to do is to remove the drain stopper or screen to gain access to the tub’s drain fitting. To do this, simply pry underneath the screen using a small flat-head screwdriver to pop it off.

However, if the tub does not have a screen, it is likely to have a stopper set into the drain opening. How you will remove it depends on the kind of stopper you have. You can remove stoppers that open and close by moving the stopper itself by unscrewing it from the drain.

Meanwhile, stoppers with a lever mechanism may have a metal rocker arm that extends through the horizontal portion of the tub drain pipe. To remove this, just gently pull the stopper and rocker arm from the drain.

Step 2: Remove the Drain With a Plug Wrench

It is time to get into action! Once you pop off the tub stopper or screen, you may now insert the end of the plug wrench into the drain opening. Make sure that the tines on the wrench fit onto the crossbars of the drain.

And since most plug wrenches have more than one size of head, you need to use the head that makes the snuggest fit.

Turn the plug wrench counterclockwise with a large adjustable wrench or tongue-and-groove pliers to loosen the drain. Then, unthread the drain all the way once it is loose enough.

Alternative: Remove the Drain With Locking Pliers

If you have locking pliers instead of a plug wrench, insert a pair of locking needle-nose pliers into the drain opening as far as jaws will go. Then, ensure that the jaws are on opposite sides of the crossbars, over the center of the “X”. Clamp the locking pliers until they grip the crossbars tightly.

To hold it in place, grip the locking pliers with a set of standard pliers. Make sure to grab as low as possible on the locking pliers so that they will not interfere with the locking action.

Then, slowly turn the pliers counterclockwise. After a few rotations, the tub drain will be loose enough so you can set aside the second set of pliers and turn the locking pliers by hand.

Pro tip: If you are having a hard time turning the flange, use a hairdryer or a heat gun to apply heat on the flange over several minutes. Doing so will soften the old plumber’s putty that may have hardened within the threads, thereby making it easier to turn the flange.

Step 3: Clean the Drain Opening

Use a flat-headed screwdriver or a putty knife and a rag to remove the old ring of plumber’s putty around the drain opening. Make sure that the old putty will not fall into the drain because it could clog your drain.

Finally, wipe off any rust or gunk using rags with cleaning products. Then, clean the tailpiece threads with a toothbrush. In case the drain is blocked, remove the hair using the zip-it drain tool. Then you are set and ready to install the new flange or tub drain.

Bonus tip: If you are replacing the old tub drain with a new one, take the old piece to the store so that you can get the right replacement part. Bathtub reglazing and refinishing can be a daunting task for homeowners.

YOUR FOOL-PROOF GUIDE ON DIY BATHTUB REFINISHING

If it has been a while since you bought your bathtub, then it is understandable if it already looks worn out and discolored. And if no amount of cleaning or scrubbing could bring it back to its former pristine condition, then it is also understandable if most homeowners would think that replacing it with a new one would be the best option. However, with all factors considered like time, money, and effort, it is in your best interest to consider bathtub refinishing/reglazing instead.

First of all, bathtub replacement will cost you a fortune as the cost of the new bathtub is only the beginning. For starters, a standard 5-foot enameled steel tub might cost around $150, but when you factor in the cost of a contractor, demolition, removal, landfill fees, tilers, and plumber fees, the total cost skyrockets.

Alternatively, there’s bathtub relining, which is also pricey but is undeniably cheaper than a full replacement. However, it is merely a band-aid solution that just covers up the problem.

At prices equal to or greater than refinishing, bathtub liners are still not the best option. Bathtub refinishing, on the other hand, is more inexpensive than a full replacement, but unlike refinishing, you never have to worry about the outer finish wearing away.

What are the Benefits of Refinishing My Tub?

Perhaps the best thing about refinishing your tub instead of replacing it is that your tub stays in place. When it comes to home remodeling, changing one thing leads to a domino effect as something adjacent also gets affected.

For instance, If the tub gets replaced and the new unit does not have the same plumbing fittings as the previous one, then you will have to deal with the plumbing issues that may arise and spend extra money on it.

Not to mention, you also have to spend on repairing the tile surround, flooring, and cement board. If you avoid replacing it in the first place, then you would not have to deal with this domino effect.

When you have a tub refinished the surrounding materials including tile, flooring, and all of the other elements are masked off and left in place.

Professional vs DIY Bathtub Refinishing

If you were thinking whether it is worth it to hire a professional to do the job or if the task is easy enough to do on your own, we are here to help you decide. First off, if the labor cost were not an issue, professional refinishing is absolutely the best way to go.

After all, professional refinishing will produce superior results in terms of appearance and the time it takes to complete the project. Not to mention, the work is far more tedious and pain-staking than one might imagine, with surface preparation comprising about 75-percent of the project.

However, if you are In a pinch or you just want to try and take matters into your own hands, a do-it-yourself job will also work. Just know that the results may not reach a professional level and that the job may not last for more than a couple of years.

Professional Bathtub Refinishing Process

Professional tub refinishers may call their process reglazing, and the specific steps they use may differ on certain aspects, but ultimately, the basic process is pretty standard.

Preparation:

  1. The pros would clean the bathtub thoroughly and remove all caulking.
  2. They would mask around the bathtub and cover areas that will not be refinished. Technicians would also put down drop cloths and covers over cabinets and plumbing fixtures. This is because refinishing technicians are aware of the fact that they are in a private residence, so they take all kinds of precautions to minimize overspray and creating a mess.
  3. They would remove the bath faucet, drain fittings, and other hardware.
  4. Technicians would set up a ventilation fan to vent overspray and odor outside.

Actual procedure:

  1. Lightly sand the entire bathtub to roughen the original finish. In some cases, the tub may also be etched with acid to help the new coating adhere better.
  2. Vacuum the bathtub to remove debris from the sanding stage.
  3. Fill in chipped, scratched, or worn areas, then sand it down to smoothen the surface.
  4. Apply up to three coats of primer with a sprayer, and let it dry.
  5. Apply three or four layers of a top-coat mixture with a sprayer, and let it cure.
  6. Buff the coating then come back a few days later for final buffing.

Results:

Appearance: The quality of a well-refinished tub rivals that of a new tub’s surface. It will have a smooth and glass-like surface.

Time of completion: Professional refinishing can take three to five hours for the process, with the tub/shower ready for use within 24 hours if they would opt not to buff the coating several days after.

Durability: Most professional refinishing jobs last for up to five years or more. Some professional refinishing companies even claim that most of its jobs last from 10 to 15 years.

Do-It-Yourself Bathtub Refinishing

If you decide on taking the DIY route, you would definitely spend less than when hiring the pros. However, it is quite possible that you will end up with an inferior finish that is more likely to peel.

Remember, a DIY coating is much tougher than ordinary paint but is not as durable as a professionally applied coating. To protect the finish, do not clean the recoated tub with any abrasive cleaners, such as Comet.

As for the materials needed, instead of using a spray gun like the professional refinishers do, use a brush or a small roller as this is easier to maneuver. You can also buy DIY kits that include a quart of epoxy with hardener, latex gloves, steel wool, brush, cleaning solution, cleaner/thinner, and safety goggles.

Preparation:

  1. Clean the tub thoroughly and remove all caulking.
  2. Remove the tub faucet and drain hardware.
  3. Mask off and cover the area around the tub.
  4. Open windows and set up fans to provide active ventilation in the work area.

Actual Procedure:

  1. Etch the surface of the tub with water and the kit’s etching powder to dull the finish so the new coating will bond to it.
  2. Rinse the tub.
  3. Sand the tub while it is still wet to further roughen it. Do this to improve the bonding of the coat to the surface.
  4. Rinse the tub and let it dry.
  5. Wipe the tub with paper towels to ensure that all water will be removed.
  6. Wipe with a dry tack cloth to remove any dust or paper residue.
  7. Apply the primer with a roller, and let it dry as directed.
  8. Mix the epoxy coating.
  9. Begin applying it to the sides of the tub with a roller. Alternate between vertical and horizontal strokes to prevent drips and roller ridges.
  10. Move on to the tub deck (horizontal surfaces), then roll the tub bottom. Finish the edges as needed with a sponge brush.
  11. Apply a second coat of epoxy coating immediately after the first.
  12. Let the tub cure for 48 hours. Keep the area ventilated for at least the first day.
  13. Reinstall the faucet and hardware.
  14. Finally, caulk the tub and let it cure overnight before using the tub.

Results:

Appearance: The use of roller and brushes results in an adequate finish. However, roller or brush marks may show, and drips may occur, as well. As such, it may not be as even and flawless as the work of a professional who uses a spray gun.

Time of completion: DIY bathtub refinishing usually takes a full day. Then you have to let it cure for 48 hours. Only then can you use the tub. Durability: DIY bathtub refinishing jobs last for about two years.
