Somerset County Council, Taunton, Somerset: Put in traffic calming measures on Benedict Street in Glastonbury
The Issue
Due to the pedestrianisation of Northload Street, Benedict Street is now a major thoroughfare in Glastonbury as it is one of the main arterial roads into the town centre. It is also a major residential street with a high population and has on it two nurseries, a primary school, a nursing home, a church, a scout hut and two pubs. All of these are important when it comes to the speed of traffic travelling along Benedict Street, which can, sometimes, be unbelievably fast. There are also lots of people living in the area who are pet owners and there is a high population of cats. My five month old Bengal kitten was killed on the street when she got out of the house unexpectedly and I have heard of other incidences with children falling off of bikes in the road and other cat deaths which have occurred on this dangerous street.
My proposal is that Somerset County Council invest in some life-saving traffic calming measures on this street including: speed humps; a 20 mile an hour limit around the school and proper signage to make people aware of the dangers on this road - there isn't even a sign to indicate the school or the nursing home, both of which should be flagged up to motorists and made clear to them that this is not an appropriate place to show off your boy/girl-racer skills and that proper attention needs to be paid when driving along here.
