Jesse Eisenberg: ‘Lex Luthor’ is ‘Complicated and Challenging’ in Batman V Superman

By: Marv Castillo

Many sites are reporting what Jesse Eisenberg said about his role in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. We all know he is playing Lex Luthor and basically what he says in the interview he did with Total Film for his new film: Night Moves, is Lex Luthor is challenging character.

Pretty much every site I have visited these past few days is saying this is nothing more than lip service, and it is. Really everything that the actor says is: “Yeah, dude, I’m playing this guy and it is a challenging role.” But he also talked about the script and his experience before accepting the role. These are his exact words:

“They asked me if I wanted to play the part before they sent me the script. I’m not sure how it worked, but it’s something I read with the understanding that I could do the role, If I…” he stopped. “You know, they don’t just hand the scripts out. But I really liked it on its own terms. I would do it if it was for free and it was tiny.”

[…]

“There are some indications of how the character should behave based on the script, and then as actor makes it his or her own,” he says. “I got to know one of the writers really well, Chris Terrio, and we were able to discuss things at length and figure out who this person is to create a real psychology behind what is, perhaps, in a comic book, a less than totally modern psychology. I can only say I’ve been asked to play an interesting role: a complicated, challenging person.”

And here is what is important about the interview. This movie has a good script.

Let’s change this movie blog name to “I don’t like Man of Steel” because what I’m going to say is not going to shock you in any way, shape or form. I don’t like Man of Steel, it has a terrible script. The screenplay for that film tried to be so serious and over complicated it failed, it is not a good start. David S. Goyer, I’m sorry, you’re a good storyteller, you did amazing things with Batman, with the Blade films and many comics in the past were good, I enjoyed them, but Man of Steel is not your best work. That being said, the new screenwriter for Batman V Superman is Chris Terrio and this guy is great. You may know Chris Terrio for Argo, he wrote a movie that I enjoyed more than I should. The dialogue in that movie is brilliant, very nice and that’s what failed the most in this Superman reboot. With a good script this movie can succeed. Let’s hope for the best and by the way: I think Jesse Eisenberg is going to a great job as Lex Luthor, his character is not about physique, he will be a good Lex… but let’s wait and see.

Just to add some fun into this post, here’s Man of Steel honest trailer by the Screen Junkies.
