About the author

Chef Derek Butt (1955-present) was born in Leicester, England. He grew up in the English countryside and was athletic and creative as a child. The family immigrated to Toronto, Canada, in 1967 in search of opportunity and a better life.
Derek always had a deep passion for music, he wanted to be a professional musician. He owned and operated Open Sound, a 16 track analog recording studio in Toronto. He worked with many established and up and coming recording artists as a studio musician, a sound engineer and a producer.
While going thru High school and college he worked nights as a cook. He completed a chefs apprenticeship and a degree in Hotel and Restaurant administration at Sheridan College. He pursued a career as a chef and after a few years of training, he opened his first restaurant Buttskis Munchies. It was a crazy name but the restaurant was very successful and innovative for its time. The concept was unique. Derek's concept of casual dining became a big success. The original owner of the Hard Rock Cafe spent allot of time in Derek's restaurant taking notes. Eventually, the first Hard Rock Cafe opened on Yonge St. using my model and the Hard Rock Cafe became a thriving franchise.
Derek spent many years working around the clock to pursue his dream of franchising his own restaurant but he eventually had a major break down. This led to some serious life changes. Derek started pursuing music again, it took many years to recover. The medical industry had him doped up on several pills a day, which basically turned him into a zombie. He eventually learned to take health care into his own hands and started making a recovery.
He studied music therapy at Capilano University in Vancouver, Canada. During this time he studied commercial and classical music. To complete his course he also studied psychology, the endocrine system and the central and peripheral nervous system. Music is energy, the vibratory movement of matter.
He also studied holistic therapies like Qi Gong, Yoga, herbal medicine, nutrition and pranic healing. A form of healing with energy. Derek is now interested in the endocannabinoid system and how cannabis can benefit us medicinally and nutritionally.
After many years of research and experimentation, he has written "The Medical Marijuana Guide. NATURES PHARMACY." A book that is a culmination of Derek's personal research and development as well as research from several leading scientists researching medical marijuana.
Derek is a true artist, a teacher, and a healer, practicing the art of science from a holistic perspective.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2018On the Goldilocks scale of subjective preference this Kindle read was just right for me. Informative, practical information that was easy to absorb and retain, written with the right balance of seriousness and Chef B's endearing sense of humor which he adds in to the mix like a fine spice. Derek is passionate about cannabis and if you also are interested in it's allure the journey begins here with this book or at least should be enjoyed along the way. My Kindle version did not include any pictures to salivate on however and I hope to see some added in future updates. The odd grammar and spelling error did not deter from my enjoyment of this book either but could also be addressed in future updates perhaps. All in all Chef B is the self professed real thing and I see no reason to disagree. I also recommend high time spent on his you tube channel for a feast of passionate but calm and reflective updates to his life's work. The informal coffee break chats are an especially cool addition to his videos. Peace.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2015As a patient I have learned a great deal from from Chef B's new book. It bypasses all the stereotypical stoner cliches' and approaches the subject matter with the seriousness and respect those using cannabis for medicinal reasons deserve. The book contains historical, scientific and culinary information that may be unknown to those who have inadvertently found themselves ill and in need of pre-western plant based medication. The recipes are a delightful supplement to Derek's YouTube cooking show. Don't think you're only getting the played out pot brownie but rather there is a pantheon of varied foods for those who must medicate often and do not wish to have a one note diet. What impressed me most was the subject of juicing non-psychoactive / non-decarboxylized cannabis leaves for continued health maintenance. As a long term patient I was surprised to find out something I was completely unfamiliar with. Pros and neophytes alike will enjoy Nature's Pharmacy.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2015My Marihuana "bible" is Joan Bello's book: THE BENEFITS OF MARIJUANA: Physical, Psychological and Spiritual.
However, when it comes to the practical applications, Chef Derek Butt's Guide will explain the working, the usage and preparation of the different recipes and other ways of taking in medical marijuana.
Because I studied the subject for half of my life, I don't often read or hear about new or re-found knowledge, like the usage of cannabis roots!
So that's an example of some of the fantastic information this book is offering.
Furthermore, it provides links to video's to get a visual understanding how to prepare something, so the book and the video's are giving you a set of some really nice workshops!.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2015(Clix Hemp from youtube) -if you can get past the many spelling errors and the grammar mistakes this book is pretty awesome. What I respected most about it is how it listed cannabis as a possible treatment for "premenstrual syndrome". When looking around in the cannabis community there is very little discussion about woman, their periods, and medical cannabis as a treatment. Mostly because when looking for a treatment for pain relief or an ease of mood swings women are only recommend strictly on hormonal treatments and later on if worsened, surgery. Even though the description was brief it had said more than enough. This book gave me a lot of information on natural remedies for the use of the raw plant as oppose to just getting high. It opens up options rather than just trending and I really liked that about it. It was a great purchase and a great read overall. It opened up my eyes to new possibilities and even a bit of hope for future treatment.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2017Not much reading. Some information, but overall lacking quantity of information that is not already available for free on the net. 2hrs and your done the book. I do like his videos on YouTube though.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2015This book has helped me throughout my culinary endeavor, from the making of salves and topicals to juicing fresh marijuana leaves, which is the very most efficient way to utilize marijuana for medical use answering your question from YouTube. I've been experimenting with hemp milk and I have also successfully made canna flour to make the lovely scones I serve my guests at the bed & breakfast I work at in amazing Washington State. I am eagerly looking forward for your next book to come out, good growing! I will also leave a more short and sweet comment on your Youtube page.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2015A good read for anyone interested in medicinal marijuana. This gives good instructions on how to make a variety of products that may be helpful if you suffer from any conditions. It also is a good guide for anyone that may wish to add cannabis to there diet (you'll learn from the book that raw cannabis leaves are good for you).
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2015Excellent source of information, far more information than I had expected. Definitely a good resource for anyone who'd like to educate themselves about marijuana, it's uses, and various ways of utilization. Very easy reading, with pictures of fantastic plants, and work cited in the back, so you know where the information came from.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, wonderful book
A wonderful, wonderful book. Hours of reading pleasure, written by a man who understands, and communicates his love for the subject so naturally and enthusiastically. I too am an aficionado, albeit a mere tyro in comparison with the good chef, and downloaded the Kindle version because it's cheaper (I'm saving for the paperback - because you can't beat the feel of a real book!) and as a pensioner, I count pennies. I have learnt an awful lot from this book and shall be putting that knowledge to good use in the future. Keeping my life on an even keel and rising above, and defeating, the inevitable pain that accompanies the ageing process that we all have to suffer. (Or defeat it, of course.)
Thank you chef.

5.0 out of 5 stars Use all the plant!
I found this book full of knowledge. The plant as a whole is beneficial in so many ways as are many other plants on earth. People in general have drifted away from natural health and we all need to get back to the basics. Peace and R.I.P. Chef B!
Followed you for years. Taught me and many others sooooo much.
