Signif cance By Rachel Gal vin

Based on the popular young adult book series by Florida-based Shelly Crane, "Significance" is a one-hour character driven sci-fi/ action/ fantasy drama. Directed by Emily Gossett, who also grew up in the sunshine state, it stars Michael Welch ("Twilight"), YouTube sensation Justin James Hughes, as well as Garrett Backstrom, Hollie Shay, Tyler Lueck and others. This series follows Maggie Masters, a strong intelligent 17-year-old girl whose life is about to change. Little does she know she will be submerged into a parallel world of super human beings. An unexpected adventure ensues and she not only becomes involved in an ancient war, but also battles herself as she searches her true identity. Will she be able to stay alive long enough to discover the real truth? These answers will unfold with this new series in the works, which was promoted June 25-28 at the Florida Supercon with their own booth as well as a screening of the trailer at the Super Geek Film Festival. Pictured are some of the cast & crew from the series, as well as Shelly Crane, the author. Their panel brought in large crowds as well as media attention. 48 Hour Fi l m Proj ect By Rachel Gal vin Did you create a film for the 48 Hour Film Project (48HFP)? If you did, you are probably still exhausted. The 48 Hour Film Project is an international event. The one in Miami, in its 11th year, is overseen by Director Cathleen Dean in Miami. How this whirlwind weekend works is that filmmakers sign up a team and show up to receive a genre they must create, as well as a character to incorporate, a prop to use and a line that must be spoken. Then, it is up to the director to get their crew together to write a script, cast it, film it and edit it all within 48 hours. Next, the films are shown in front of an audience of peers. Films were screened June 17 and 18 at the Little Haiti Cultural Center. Filmmakers had different genres but, for character, they had to use an Uncle George or Aunt Georgia. Prop was "a souvenir," and the line needed was "OK. Let's go." or "OK, Let us go." Awards will be given on July 10 at 7 p.m. at the Little Haiti Cultural Center (212-260 NE 59 Terr., Miami 33137) A few of the filmmakers chimed in about this year's fest. Director Jason Gal ot t i , from Margate, FL, is used to putting together films quickly. It seems like every weekend, this go-getter is putting together a film for something. This time, it was for the 48HFP. The genre he chose was "Espionage."His film, "Unfinished Business," (pict ured above) followed the story of two agents fighting for control of a microchip with critical information on how to construct a nuclear reactor. "Participating in this year's Miami 48 Hour Film Project had its stressful moments; but, overall, it was a fun and positive experience. I had the pleasure of working with a talented and professional group. Filming took all day Saturday to complete. There were four crew members and five total cast members. The most challenging thing definitely had to be finding shoot locations," Galotti said, adding, "It seems like we can never find the right ones when we need them during these types of competitions. But, being that 5 we are on such a tight schedule, we make do with what we do find."

Actor Tommy O'Brien , who actually moved from South Florida to Atlanta recently, drove back down to the Sunshine State to be a part of "Code Name: Souvenir." This is his second year working with this team, but the 3rd year for the team. They chose Action/ Adventure. O'Brien played a detective who leads a raid to get a mind control weapon before it is delivered but things don't quite go that easily for him. The film was directed by Eric Garner and Albert Leon Vonora, and produced by Kyle Jeter, who is an Astronomy teacher at Stoneman Douglas High. Jeter's former students, who are now in college, worked on the film, according to O'Brien. (On l ef t , see cast & crew). "The reason I was on this team again, driving all the way from Atlanta, is because of Kyle Jeter. I met with the team, including Kyle, and the kids were awesome. They treated me with so much respect and I did likewise. Having a history with student films (I have done 25), I know they have the same passion in creating that I have in acting." Jeter added, "We've developed a strategy for writing the story each time. Essentially, we divide up into three groups in different rooms of my house and each group has 30-45 minutes to develop a story. We then "pitch" all three to the whole group, argue for each and then vote! This year, my little group's idea won, so I was happy. It had plenty of action and it was the best we could do with the time and locations we had." This is the 10th time the BigFoot Product ions & Ext reme Del ray team has put together a film for the 48HFP. Tom Leeman, Jan and Melodie Van der Baan and Kurt Donath came together to create "Eat Your Wheaties" around the genre "Film de Femme." (Pict ured bel ow is Mel odie and Jan). Leeman said, "This year, we tackled the LGBT issue and poked a little fun at the political hypocrisy."

6

Tabatha Mudra and her team 1310 Bandits pulled the Horror genre. Her team grew from four to nine overnight, eight females and one male. She said, "I early registered as team leader to connect with other artists I haven't had the pleasure of working with on one slightly intense and masochistic 48 hour project. None of us had ever done the Miami 48 hour film challenge, but were up for the task. Not knowing what genre we would pull out of the hat, and really crossing fingers not to get certain genres, we were on a blood-shedding razor-sharp mission! We brought what we thought was an important message to a concept that is still overlooked in the onscreen ... abuse of women. Although, onscreen, only one made it out alive, we all survived the 48 hour film project challenge!"

Let t er f rom t he Publ isher July is here ... the month known for Independence Day. Is it time to declare your independence? Are you tied to something that is holding you back? Take a good long look at your life. Make a list of who is in your circle. What communities are you a part of? Include work, school, production company, church, friends, family, social media, etc. Which people build you up and which tear you down? Which add value to your life and which cause more drama than they are worth? Do you really want to be at the end of the 2015 and still be dealing with them in your life? They say the definition of crazy is doing the same thing over and over again. What changes can you make now that will affect your future? Where would you like to be at the end of the year? What successes do you hope to attain and who would you like to be with you to celebrate? Now is the time to reassess those in your "circle of trust." Does that mean unfriending certain Facebook friends? Not necessarily. Remember, it is good to have a way to communicate what you are up to to a large audience. But be careful who you trust and share your dreams with. Break a leg! --Rachel Gal vin

" Geo r g e & A n g i e" After working on "Nothing to Lose," which was shown at Film Carpet at Cinema Paradiso in Ft. Lauderdale, director Jon Vargas decided to go in a different direction. Instead of focusing on more violent films, which filled his cinematic repertoire, he decided to turn to making a romantic comedy. Thus, "George & Angie" was born. This film took him three days, longer than any other of his films. The film follows George (Michael J. Sanchez), who is forced by his friend Alex (William Alexander) to attend a party. There, he meets Angie (Jenessi Garcia), but he finds out she has a troubled past. He has to decide if he will follow his friends or follow his heart. The film, produced by Diana Rice, was shot in Plantation, Boca Raton and Deerfield Beach. Find the movie on Facebook.

Ch ef Ben Robi n son Tal k s ?Bel ow Deck ? & Bey on d By Rachel Gal vin For Chef Ben Robinson, combining gastronaumical goodness while sailing in the salty seas is a perfect combination. He thinks it may even be his destiny. The fact that he got on the small screen for pursuing his dream is just a bonus. Robinson is best known for his role as yacht chef on the Bravo show ?Below Deck.? He gained the position after applying on a whim one late night when he saw the ad for the position online. He won out over 1000 chefs due to his lengthy resume. After all, he had been a yacht chef for over eight years at 13 the time. He had learned about flavors from around the

Ju l y 2015

world, including working under Italian masters in Florence and working under Heston Blumenthal at the 3-Michelin Star restaurant The Fat Duck in England, where he was born. ?I was interested in cooking at a young age. I cooked with my mom at age of 6 or 7,? said Robinson. He learned about molecular gastronomy and combining sophisticated flavors, and also when to know when it was time to stop. ?[Some people think] plating comes after you can cook really well. But it is symbiotic. Everything has to come together,? he added. ?I have been a personal chef for so long. I love to get inside the client's head and re-create a dish they love, but have my own twist on it,? said Robinson, who thought he would be a painter, but decided the culinary arts was a more stable pursuit. When deciding to be involved in the TV show, he wasn't sure what he would be getting himself into. ?I didn't know what to expect. I was never a big TV guy. I had never watched a reality show. It came with a lot of stigma. I tried to be open-minded,? he

said, adding, ?I learned quickly that a lot was going to be revealed and that actions could have consequences. I came into it a little nervous. Any intelligent person would be.? He learned quickly that he would not have much privacy, as two guys with cameras followed the cast around and there was surveillance in the galley, as well as cameras in the bedroom, etc. ?In the first season, it was my full-time job to avoid the cameras. I was nervous. It was an unnatural environment. I have grown to be more comfortable. I try to embrace it,? he explained. He was happy to be able to review the footage three days before the general public to prepare himself ahead of time for what was going to be out in public view. ?I learned a lot about myself. Sometimes, I didn't like the person on the screen. Sometimes the communication was bad between the group,? he said. He also noticed his extreme dedication to perfection in his work. ?I tend to bite off more than I can chew. I make everything from

scratch and don't take shortcuts. I think being a yacht chef is the hardest job,? he said. He is on set for six weeks plus additional interviews and tell-all reunions. The next season (as of press time) has not yet been greenlighted, but would begin filming in the fall. In the meantime, he is running his own private catering company, under his own name, from his own home in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He focuses on sophisticated flavors with nutritional awareness. He is a health consultant also, helping people with everything from losing weight to coming up with menus that help with diabetes and other health issues. He still thinks maybe someday he could open a restaurant, but this is the perfect position for now. ?The business is run over the phone. I could be anywhere in the world,? he said. ?The thing with cooking, it demands physicality. If they want me to work, I have to be there. Being a health consultant with food was the answer. I couldn't think of a better pair.? When he does open a restaurant, he is thinking of incorporating organic, gluten and lactose free, and other health-conscious selections into a fast food environment. ?I don't know if I want to sign on to a restaurant. I have been in the kitchen 15 years for many hours a day," he said. When not working in food, this Floridian spends time paddleboarding, biking, meeting friends and trying new restaurants, as well as hanging out on the beach.

"Faceof t heFat her " A l ex ander Leaty di rects By Rachel Gal vin Alexander Leaty has worked for many years as an actor in South Florida. Currently, he is working on directing what he terms his "debut film." It is called "Face of the Father." It is being shot between West Palm and Tequesta, FL with local actors, including Chris Marks, Jamil Malik, Orfelina de Leon, Johnny Dymond, Jonathan Clarke, Jacqueline Journey, Skye Coyne and many others, including J. Allen Rager, who stars and wrote the script. As of press time, Leaty was primarily in post production. "We need to shoot three pick up shots. We are editing now. Once done, we'll be working on sound then score," he said.

Ju l y 2015

Asked what challenged him most about the shoot, he said, "Man, it was tough. We starting shooting around rainy season. So, on our outdoor scenes, which we shot first, a lot of time was wasted because we had to stop filming and come back another time. There were times that we said, 'Screw it' and we shot in the rain. On top of that, we lost light early which was a pain. It got dark around 5 p.m. I wish we would have shot the outdoor scenes around this time when it gets dark at 7 or 8 p.m." The weather always is an issue in filmmaking, but plenty of filmmakers, like Leaty, work around Mother Nature. Originally, Rager was going to direct himself, said Leaty, but fate led things to go a different way. Rager wanted a capoeira fighter and Leaty told him he could do it (he had been doing it for 20 years), but only if he could "do the cinematography and direct it." Before that, Leaty had worked on a trailer for his film "Torment," which he still plans to make. Showing the trailer to Rager helped to seal the deal. He said, "I wanted to direct this ["Face of the Father"] to show what I can do. This way, they know what to expect when they see the 'Torment' feature. I wanted to direct the short before directing my feature."
