Video text: “There is no fundamental difference between man and the higher mammals in their mental faculties..the lower animals, like man, manifestly feel pleasure and pain, happiness and misery. Happiness is never better exhibited than by young animals, .." --- Charles Darwin. This piece of music is about poor animal welfare in the industrial livestock production worldwide. However, since I am Danish, it is especially dedicated to the animals in the conventional pig production in Denmark. It was especially with the pigs' terrible living conditions in mind that made me choose to live as a vegan November 2015. Most of the following facts are from www.Anima.dk. Anima is a Danish animal rights organization. (Anima do not have any connection to this movie.) In addition, it should be said that many pigs live under similar conditions elsewhere in Europe and the United States. Denmark produces annually 29 million pigs! The pigs live their entire life indoor, in cramped conditions in huge barns, that do not take into account the animals' natural needs. A pig of 110 kg is only entitled to 0.65 m2 space. 90% of the pork produced in Denmark is exported abroad. The 5 largest animal welfare problems in the Danish pig production are: 1. Routine tail docking and castration of piglets without anaesthesia. 95% of the piglets get their tail cut off without anaesthesia, despite the fact that tail docking without anaesthesia has been banned, by EU law since 2008. 2. Sick and weak piglets are being put to sleep by being taken in the hind legs and thrown hard against the floor. - a method that often has to be repeated before the animal is dead. 3. 25.000 piglets die every day in Denmark, many die due to the intensive breeding. Piglets are removed from their mothers when they are only 4 to 5 weeks old. 4. 80% of slaughter pigs are suffering from stomach ulcers, due to improper feed which only takes rapid growth into account. 5. Breeding sows are fixed in small gestation- and farrowing crates as does not allow the pig to turn around or or lie comfortable. The sows can be fixed in the crates for months and they get pressure sores. "A former stable employee describes it as follows; "We almost had to hit them yellow and blue to get them in. They simply will not in there once they've tried it before. They know that they can neither turn nor move in there. It's the pure torture they're in. " "-- Anima.dk When the pigs arrive at the slaughterhouse it turns out that many pigs have pressure sores and abscesses. Many also has bleedings and skin damage from blunt violence inflicted by humans. Some pigs are exported alive abroad. Here they come on a long animal transport, throughout Europe, under horrible conditions and often without rest or food and water for as long as 24 hours. A few words about the animals that deliver the milk to the dairy industry. Did you know In nature, a cow can live up to 20 years but a dairy cow is slaughtered when it is only 3 to 4 years old because it is worn out. A dairy cow must have calf once a year to give milk. The newborn calf is permanently removed from its mother when it is only 12 to 24 hours old. The calf's gender determine its destiny. If it is a "girl" she meets the same horrifying fate as her mother. If it is a "boy" he will most likely be killed a few hours after his birth because it is costly to feed him up. Some bull calves risk being sent on a long and exhausting transport to Holland. In Holland, they are intensively fattened on a special diet before being slaughtered. This is not allowed in Denmark, since these bull calves suffer from constant diarrhea, due to improper feed which only takes rapid growth into account. But strangely, it is legal to send them out of the country this way, even when you know what conditions are waiting for them.
