Kobe’s Death a Lesson for Us All

The world was stunned by the news of Kobe Bryant’s death from a helicopter crash in Southern California this past Sunday, 26 January 2020. What made it even more stunning, and tragic, and sad, was the death of his 13 year old daughter, Brianna, a stunning basketball talent in her own right. Six other passengers including the pilot, perished in the violent crash. According to sources, the helicopter achieved a height of 2,400ft before nosediving into a mountainside at approximately 184 miles per hours. At that rate of speed, no one knew what hit them.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is that the Sikorsky S-76 had no business flying on such a foggy day. In fact, air traffic controllers held up the helicopter for a while before giving them the go ahead to fly. It is a decision they are no doubt regretting today. Certainly the pilot would have been among them had he survived. It’s been reported that some aviation officials stated that not even the minimum flight visibility requirements were met for helicopter flight that day.
