James and Margaret were out Christmas shopping. As always they walked through the parking lot quietly observing all the local characters. Between ‘What should we get Uncle Fred?’ and ‘What size is Aunt Bernice this year?’ were several smarmy comments about people’s distinctive appearance and oddball habits.
‘Christmas shopping,’ he explained, ‘is an annual milestone that brings out all the weird in mankind.’ In the background he heard some talking. When he paid more attention he noticed something. ‘I can’t believe it,’ he said. They’re laughing at us.’
‘Oh well,’ she said. Everybody must think everyone else is weird.’
