Mojang's Notch is a smart person, not only in terms of game design but also when it comes to managing the company's 20 million or so Minecraft players. The designer published an online poll on his blog to find out whether his cuboid buddies would be happy with the company collecting anonymous data from its players.

Mojang currently tracks players only when they logins to the game. Notch proposes to track "non-private" information, like the length of a gameplay session and OS type, as well as whether you are playing in multi-player or single mode and whether you are using the client or web applet. The community would then have access to the data gathered "as normal."

Notch said that the data will be sent "naturally" anonymously. "So it wouldn't contain any details about your session or user name, and it wouldn't transmit any sensitive information that you wouldn't want to divulge." We're a bit amazed that this kind of data hasn't been collected to be honest. If you're part of the Minecraft nation, you can make your voice heard by voting in favor or against anonymous data collection here.
