I have been working on setting up a Minecraft server for a couple of days now, and I cannot find a way to get my friends outside of my network to connect. I know they have the correct IP address. I have tried multiple solutions to no avail. However, I can connect to the server using other computers connected to the router. However, I believe that this only works if the router is set to “cracked”.

I tried disabling both my router and host firewalls, using a different host computer as my server host, and changing my port. All of the solutions I tried gave me the same message: “Cannot Reach Server” to my friends. However, I was able and connected perfectly fine. Here is some potentially useful information:

Host computer

Minecraft Server: -Version: 1.0.0 (jar)

Router: -Type: Wired/Wireless -Brand: Cisco -Model: Linksys E2000 -IP Address: 192.168.1.1 -Router Information: Firmware Version: 1.0.01 build 7Apr 15, 2010 Firmware Verification: 5447e765c2287b134ec7028c3b7c9ceb Current Time: Fri, 06 Jan 2012 18:44:02 Internet MAC Address: 98:FC:11:719:CB -Internet Connection: Connection Type: Automatic Configuration – DHCP Internet IP Address: 64.6.115.194 Subnet Mask: 255.255.248.0 Default Gateway: 64.6.112.1 DNS1: 8.8.8.8 DNS2: 8.8.4.4 DNS3: 216.147.229.12 MTU: 1500 DHCP Lease Time: 4 Hour

If you have any questions, please let me know.

You must forward some ports (router setting) and then open the incoming port in your firewall’s OS settings. This is the place to start.

no luck

That’s what I tried. It didn’t work.

What error did you get? Is minecraft equipped with a manual for hosting servers? If so, does it specify which port it uses to host the server? Make sure you forward the correct port to the correct LAN IP of the server (assign the server a static ip). Also, make sure there is no firewall blocking that port.

It says “Cannot reach server” on my friend’s computer.

Most ISPs will provide dynamic WANIP. It is important to check your WAN IP regularly as it might change. They may also need the port whem to connect like 64.6.115.194.12345.

I identified the problem.

I got it to work…actually…quite a while ago. It wasn’t posted.

However, I gave my friend an external IP address to connect to. I used my home network’s internal IP address to connect to computers in my home network. I also set my router to forward port 25565 to my server IP (Server IP).

I’m sure you all said that before, but my understanding of it was not sufficient.

Thank you!

Does your external IP address change all the time? Does that mean you have to give the external to your friend every time he wants to play? What happens if the friend’s IP address changes? What do dynamic IPs mean?

mscholes asked: Does your external IP address change constantly? Wouldn’t that mean you need to give him the external every time the friend wanted to play? What happens if the friend’s IP address changes? Is there something I am missing about dynamic IPs Click to expand…

Your ISP owns a range of IP addresses. An IP address is assigned to a user when they connect to the internet. The expiry date/time is extended if the user remains connected. The IP which the user used previously will be available to another user when he disconnects.

In the dmz (Applications & Gaming> DMZ) of your router, you should enter the host computer’s ip addresses. See if this works first (list the routing table). If it works, set up Advanced Routing > Setup to assign the computer a static IP address. It’s similar to a 192.168.1.100 adress. I don’t know how to read your manual so I can’t help any more. Also, place your friend’s routers in the dmzs. You might also need to disable your router firewall. Good luck.

I know there are various posters but if you’re following my idea look in the routing table of your router for the ip address I’m talking about. I think you find it in Setup > Advanced Routing in your router’s setup. You can also keep it simple. You can do it all without a router.

Go to whatismyipaddress.com this will show you your external IP used this IP to let anyone over the internet to connect to your server. You need to assign static LAN IP to your mincecraft server (OS settings), forward the ports used by your minecraft server (router settings), you need to open the firewall ports used by minecraft server game (OS settings).

user –> internet –> port:1234 WAN IP, ROUTER–>port1234LAN IP, minecraft server any data that goes through port 1234 (internet facing) will be forwarded to port 1234 of your minecraft server.

I have done everything. Changed WAN from 25565 to the minecraft port. The server ip was added to the server propities. I’m stuck! Please help! I have a Tplink and the modle number is W8950ND.

Please read the previous posts.

Okay, now what?

-Open any web browser on your network and type “what my IP address” There will appear four strings of numbers, which vary in length and are separated with dots. If not, you can try a different search provider. This is your external IP address. Give this information to your server colleagues. -Next, open Command Prompt. Type “ipconfig”. The first string of numbers is your internal IP address. Use this for connecting your “game” computer to the server, as well as any other computers connected directly to your router. Note that this up can change, so you will need to keep checking it and changing editing the saved server name accordingly (also, only for computers directly connected to the router.) This is the hard part. The tricky part is when you go to your internet browser. Enter your external IP in the address bar and hit Enter. Take a screenshot of that page and upload it to this thread. I will show you where to go from there.

NOTE: If you are still having trouble allowing your friends to connect, just let me know. However, you can allow your friends to connect at any point. I don’t know if that will work.

I asked you to send me an image of your router settings. Enter the external IP address in your browser’s address box and let me know what you see. If nothing appears, your router might not be compatible with port forwarding. When you arrive at the page press [Print Screen] on the keyboard. Then, use any image editor to copy the screenshot into an image, save it, and then post it on the thread. Simple.

If you don’t understand my instructions or can’t read the text, send me your Skype or Yahoo username. I can walk you through the process using Skype or Yahoo! Messenger.

Hey, guys. I have been experiencing the exact same problem recently. I haven’t been able to connect to any Minecraft servers for about a month. I had a list of at least ten servers and they all said, “Can’t Connect to Server.”

A few days before this happened, my brother and me had made our own server. He port-forwarded and everything. I was able access it fine for the first few day, but then I couldn’t connect to it again unless I was using his computer, which is where we host the server. This may have something to do with the situation, but I thought I’d mention it anyway. I can still access it if he uses his laptop and his alone. He also cannot connect to any servers other than our own.

I can’t think any reason we couldn’t connect.

I know he had port-forwarding issues, but we were able, for a few days, to connect to other servers. Then everything went black. I would be grateful if you could help me with this!
Games

To add onto this, we got a new router right around the time that our problems started. While I don’t see how this would change anything, I do think there might be something I need to fix with the router. Please let me know.

@Seanic

1: Talk to your internet provider to see if there are any problems there

2: For the other servers that you tried to connect to, make sure you have the right IP address, and include a port number if required. You don’t need the port number if it’s 25565, as that is the default Minecraft port. Example: IP address: 12.3.4.56 Port number: 25566 IP address including port: 12.3.4.56:25566

3: If your problem persists, post your server IP address in the forums. I will also need to know the time it will be on. So, create a time range and post it. Don’t worry. It will only send me a signal if it is possible. I won’t do anything else unless allowed.

Though I am not a professional, I can still be of great help, because I have dealt with setting up a Minecraft server, and most of the problems comming from the laptop that runs it.

I’ll do my best to make it possible for me to turn the server on at some point in the future, but it may take a while.

But I thought I’d let you guys know that I am able to connect to one server, aside from the one that we host. It’s the only one that shows up as online and the only one I can connect to.

Apr 22, 2012

Keep in mind, however, that not all public servers can be accessed 24/7. Even servers listed as 24/7 aren’t always available. Server maintenance, power outages, and crashes can all affect them. That might be the reason you aren’t able to connect to them.

ITS Simple I had the exact same problem #1. Download Simple Port Forwarding #2. You must Allow something on the Start Page, but I don’t recall what it was. It was probably related to Java or The Jar. Unlock your Internet Router or give them the Internet Router Password so they can join If they still cant join Then you have a Cheap Internet Rounter Antena but thats how mine worked DONT FORGET TO SWITCH YOUR ONLINE MODE=FALSE IN THE SERVER PROPERTIES IF ITS MINECRAFT CRACKED(FREE)

I have 1 question for everybody, I have a Normal server and my friends CAN connect to it, I made a Bukkit Server but I can join it, but my friends cant and everythings the same as the Normal server, Do I have to Port anything else?? ?

Your internal IP address could have changed. Click Start on the server computer and then click My Network Places. Double-click on the internet connection it’s using. In the dialog box that appears, click on Support tab (if it is Windows XP). It will tell you the IP number. You should now be able to update the port forwarding settings and forward to the new IP. Note: While I don’t know which tab Windows Vista or 7 shows the IP address, I can assure that the IP address is located in that dialog box.

If attempting to access your router through a web browser (by entering the external IP address into the address bar) does not bring you to the router’s settings page, your router either… 1. You cannot access the settings page via a web browser. In this case, compatible software will be required to access the settings. It doesn’t have a settings page, so you will need to use another method to forward port-forwarding to the server.

Note: I have a Linksys Wireless/Wired router that supports port-forwarding. You could base your decision around that (if you decide to buy a new router).
