Martin Creed – You Return: New music

Music has always been a part of Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed's life and work, with snatches of doorbells and metronomes cropping up in some of his gallery-based exhibitions. In 1994 he formed a band called Owada, while his debut album proper, Love To You, was released by Moshi Moshi in 2012 and was preceded by the charmingly-titled double a-side single, Fuck Off and Die. Since then, his work has appeared at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic celebrations, while January next year sees the opening of the first major retrospective of his work at the Hayward Gallery. He's also returning to music with his forthcoming second album, Mind Trap, which is preceded by the ramshackle indie pop of the first single, You Return. Rattling along over a spindly guitar riff and with a buoyant bounce that recalls The Cribs, it's the also the soundtrack to a new film by the artist entitled Work No. 1701. Simplistic in its concept, the film features a varied range of characters crossing a busy New York street. Why that specific focus? "I like the way people move" Creed explains. Fair enough.
