Tim Branson talks with Reggie "Fieldy" Arvizu about his former addictions, his new salvation and why he's staying with the band. Read Transcript

Reporter: HIS NAME IS

REGGIE ARVIZU, BUT MOST PEOPLE JUST

KNOWN HIM AS FIELDY, BASS

PLAYER FOR THE ROCK BAND

CORN.

A LOT OF IT WAS WOMEN.

ONE-NIGHT STANDS OF GROUPIES

AND ALL OF THAT.

I BECAME REALLY MEAN.

I WAS TRIGGERED EASILY.

I COULD BECOME VIOLENT AND I

COULD KILL PEOPLE.

Reporter: I RECENTLY

TALKED WITH FIELDY ABOUT HIS

ROCK AND ROLL LIFESTYLE, AND

SOME OF THE MORE DIFFICULT

CHOICES HE MADE IN LIFE,

INCLUDING HIS DECISION TO

FOLLOW CHRIST AND STAY WITH

THE BAND CORN.

YOU STARTED DRINKING AT A

VERY EARLY AGE.

HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?

I DON'T KNOW, MAN, I WAS

PROBABLY FIVE OR SIX.

MY PARENTS WOULD TUCK ME

INTO BED, AND MY MOM WOULD

BE LIKE, I LOVE YOU, AND MY

DAD WOULD BE, DREAM ABOUT

BUDWEISER'S.

WHY.

THAT'S WHAT HE KNEW.

I HAD MY BIG BUDWEISER

PILLOWS IN MY ROOM.

I WAS DESTINED TO BE A

PARTIER, I GUESS.

Reporter: YOUR PARENTS

WERE PARTYING ALL OF THE

TIME.

HOW DOES THAT AFFECT YOUR

FAMILY?

IT STARTS OUT, AND THEY

ARE DRINKING AND PARTYING

AND MUSIC, AND TOWARDS THE

END OF THE NIGHT IT WOULD BE

THE SAME THING.

THERE WERE BE DISHES FLYING

AND YELLING TO VIOLENCE TO

ABUSE.

THEY LOVED EACH OTHER, BUT

THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED.

Reporter: ALCOHOL AND

DRUGS HAS A WAY OF DOING

THAT.

YEAH.

IT BRINGS OUT THAT OTHER

SIDE.

Reporter: "THAT OTHER"

BLEW UP WHEN HIS PARENTS

DIVORCED.

FIELDY WAS HEARTBROKEN, SO

HE DID WHAT ANY TEENAGER

WOULD DO TO BLOCK THE PAIN,

HE SHUT DOWN.

I WAS LIKE, THIS IS NOT

GOING TO HURT ME.

I TOLD MY DAD, I'LL MOVE IN

WITH YOU.

LET'S GET A KEG, AND LET'S

PARTY.

WE'LL PLAY MUSIC AND PLAY.

I PUT A WALL UP.

THAT'S WHEN I BEGAN DRINKING

FOR A WAY THAT NOBODY IS

GOING TO HURT ME.

BUT FROM THAT MOMENT ON, I

NEVER HAD A SOBER DAY.

Reporter: FIELDY FORMED

THE BAND PIERCE WITH SOME

HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDS.

AND HE ALSO STARTED USING

SPEED.

WHEN WE WERE IN THESE

YOUNGER BANDS, THEY WERE

KIND OF LIKE HAIR METAL

BANDS.

THE REAL IMAGE WAS TO BE

REALLY SKINNY, BIG HAIR,

LITTLE, STICK BODY.

IT WAS LIKE, HEY, IF YOU

TAKE THESE SPEED PILLS RIGHT

HERE, YOU WON'T BE HUNGRY.

AND SO I STARTED, YOU KNOW,

GETTING INTO THAT.

I WENT TO JAIL A FEW TIMES,

BUT LOOKING BACK, I SHOULD

HAVE BEEN IN JAIL EVERY

DAY.

I JUST DIDN'T GET CAUGHT.

Reporter: PIERCE FELL

APART, AS DID OTHER BANDS

THAT FOLLOWED.

IN 1993, FIELDY AND FRIENDS

CAME UP WITH A NEW NAME AND

CALLED THEMSELVES CORN.

WITH A NEW SOUND AND NEW

LEAD SINGER, THE BAND TOOK

OFF AND SO DID FIELDY'S

PARTY LIFE.

I HAD MY NIGHTS OF BEING

IN HOTEL ROOMS AND

DESTROYING THEM BY MYSELF TO

CRYING.

BECAUSE I WOULD WAKE UP IN

THE MORNING FEELING SO BAD

FROM PARTYING, I WOULD

BE, LIKE, SHAKING AND I

WOULD WAKE UP AND THROW UP

IN THE MORNING.

AND I WAS LIKE, MAN, I CAN'T

HANDLE THIS, SO I WOULD TAKE

SOME XANAX OR ADA VAN, AND

THEN I WOULD SMOKE TO WEED.

THE GOAL WAS TO SAY BUZZED

24/7.

Reporter: CORN WAS

HUGE, PLAYING IN SOLD OUT

ARENAS AROUND THE WORLD.

IN THE MIDST OF IT ALL,

FIELDY MARCHED AND DIVORCED

TWICE.

Reporter: YOU HAD A

VERY SPECIFIC VIEW ABOUT

WOMEN.

WHAT WAS THAT?

HOW WOULD YOU SEE WOMEN IN

YOUR LIFE?

I WOULD BASH ON THEM.

Reporter: BACK ON THEM?

SAY WOMEN ARE JUST

SLUTS.

Reporter: VERBALLY?

YEAH.

NO GOOD.

I WAS REALLY MEAN TO WOMEN,

EXTRA MEAN, TO WHERE I COULD

MAKE ALMOST EVERY WOMAN

CRY.

I GUESS THAT'S WHAT I DID TO

KEEP FROM GETTING HURT.

Reporter: FIELDY WAS

STILL DEALING WITH THE PAIN

FROM HIS PARENTS' DIVORCE.

YOU SPENT A LOT OF TIME AND

EFFORT BUILDING UP THE WALLS

AROUND YOUR HEART.

ONE HEARTBREAK, 20

YEARS.

MOST PEOPLE GET OVER A

HEARTBREAK IN, LIKE, A

YEAR.

20 YEARS OF DESTROYING

MYSELF?

IT'S A VICIOUS CYCLE.

YOU'RE LIVING INSIDE A

TORNADO, SPINNING, LIKE IT'S

FAST.

AND IT ENDS UP KILLING YOU.

Reporter: DID YOU EVER

COME TO A POINT AND SAY,

THIS HAS GOT TO STOP?

I DON'T THINK I DID.

I ALWAYS MADE A JOKE OUT OF

EVERYTHING.

IF I WAS LIKE MY HANDS ARE

SHAKING AND I'M, LIKE,

THROWING UP, I'D MAKE A

JOKE.

HEY, EVERYBODY WATCH THIS.

Reporter: IT WAS NO

JOKE WITH FIELDY'S FATHER

WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER.

TO ME, MY DAD WAS KIND OF

LIKE A SUPER HERO.

THERE IS NO WAY THIS COULD

HAPPEN.

EVEN TO THE POINT WHERE HE

GOT REALLY SICK AND WE HAD

TO MOVE HIM OVER TO TOP

DOCTORS IN THE WORLD.

I WAS LIKE, THEY CAN FIX

IT.

I'VE GOT MONEY -- THEY CAN

FIX IT.

I'VE GOT THE BEST INSURANCE

IN THE WORLD.

Reporter: BUT HE

WASN'T.

HIS FATHER DIED.

WITH ONE WISH.

HE WISHED I WOULD BE

SAVED.

Reporter: WHEN HE ASKED

FIELDY TO PRAY THE PRAYER OF

SALVATION, HE DID.

I JUST DID IT BECAUSE

EVERYBODY WAS FREAKING OUT.

I WAS SO OUT OF MY MIND.

MY DAD PASSED AND THAT'S

WHEN EVERYBODY CAME BACK TO

HOUSE.

I WENT THROUGH A DEEP, LIKE,

DARK MOMENT.

AND I JUST REALLY STARTED

THINKING ABOUT EVERYTHING,

FROM WHAT I'M DOING TO

MYSELF, TO HIS DEATH, TO

HOW -- YOU KNOW, WHAT I'VE

LEAVING BEHIND.

I KNOW I COULDN'T TAKE IT

ANYMORE.

Reporter: THAT LED

FIELDY TO A SINCERE PRAYER

OF COMMITMENT THAT CHANGED

HIS LIFE.

I HAD CHILLS THROUGHOUT

MY WHOLE BODY.

ALMOST LIKE A COLDNESS, AND

I WAS CRYING.

AND I WAS LIKE, WHERE ARE

THESE TEARS COMING FROM.

I'M JUST READING SOME

WORDS.

I TELL A LOT OF PEOPLE, YOU

CAN DO THE SAVIOR PRAYER

WITH YOUR BRAIN.

IT'S NOT GOING TO DO

ANYTHING.

YOU HAVE TO DO IT WITH YOUR

HEART.

WHEN I ACCEPTED CHRIST, I

WAS LIKE NOW I'M GOING TO

PRAY FOR SOME OF THESE

THINGS I'M A SLAVE TO.

IT WENT IN STEPS, SO THAT I

WAS SET FREE WITH NO

WITHDRAWALS, FROM THE WEED

TO THE PILLS, EVERYTHING --

I STOPPED.

Reporter: OVER TIME, HE

BECAME MORE AWARE OF HIS

NEED FOR GOD'S FORGIVENESS.

I WALKED INTO THE

BATHROOM AND PUT MY FACE ON

THE FLOOR AND SAY, FORGIVE

ME, MAN, BECAUSE SOME OF THE

THINGS I DID WERE SO BAD.

I JUST KNEW HE SAID, I

FORGIVE YOU, SON.

Reporter: FIELDY SPENT

A YEAR APOLOGIZING TO

EVERYONE HE COULD THINK OF

THAT HE HURT.

THE HARDEST PERSON TO

APOLOGIZE TO WAS HIS

GIRLFRIEND AT THE TIME,

DINA.

I WAS GOING TO

HEARTBROKEN IF SHE LEFT ME.0

I WAS LIKE, MAN, I'VE REALLY

GOT TO TAKE A CHANCE OF HAVE

HER LEAVING ME AFTER I TELL

HER I'VE BEEN CHEATING ON

HER.

Reporter: DINA WAS

FURIOUS, BUT SHE FORGAVE

FIELDY.

THE TWO MARRIED.

AND I ASKED HIM ABOUT HIS

DECISION TO STAY WITH THE

BAND, AND HERE IS HIS

REASON:

THERE IS SO MUCH POWER OF

STAYING WITH CORN.

I CAN REACH SO MANY PEOPLE.

Reporter: WHAT IS

REGGIE OR FIELDY ALL ABOUT

THESE DAYS?

I WANT TO FOLLOW THE

BIBLE THE BEST I CAN BECAUSE

I KNOW IT WILL GIVE ME THE

BEST LIFE.

Reporter: NOW THAT HE

HAS GOT THE BIBLE AND

FOLLOWED IT, HIS MESSAGE IS

REALLY PRETTY SIMPLE:

PEOPLE THINK I'M NOT GOOD

ENOUGH TO HAVE THE LORD COME

INTO MY LIFE.

PEOPLE HAVE TO KNOW THAT

JESUS DIED FOR YOUR SINS AND

CAME BACK THREE DAYS LATER.

IF YOU ASK HIM INTO YOUR

HEART, IT'S FOR LIFE.

HE'S GOING TO BE WITH YOU

FOREVER.
