A day after Browns owner Jimmy Haslam admitted the team contacted the 49ers about making a deal, York acknowledged there was a discussion but the deal was quickly turned down.
“Not far at all,” York told the Sacramento Bee. “We had no interest in entering those discussions.”
NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk reported that the two sides were close to a deal that would have sent multiple draft picks to the 49ers in exchange for Harbaugh, who rejected a move to Cleveland.
York denied the report on Friday via Twitter. He told the Bee the teams were never as close to a deal as the reported indicated.
York also said the 49ers want to secure a long-term deal with Harbaugh.

When the Carolina Panthers exercised 2014 and ‘15 options on linebacker Thomas Davis’ contract last week, they restructured his deal so it is more salary-cap friendly, the Charlotte Observer reported.
The new deal created cap space by adding three voidable years onto the back end of the deal. The extra years spread out Davis’ cap hit. The contract options gave Davis a $5 million bonus and reduced his salary for this year to the veteran’s minimum of $950,000, cutting $3.25 million off his cap figure.
