International indie/post-rock four-piece band founded in 1998 and based in Paris and Toronto, with members coming from Russia, Mexico and France, Utopium is a project without any borders.

After having recorded its debut EP in London in summer 2000, the band unleashed this first effort a few months later. Compared to bands like The Smashing Pumpkins or My Bloody Valentine, Utopium returned to the studio to make a second EP called ‘Persistence’. After more than two years of gigs and studio work the band released in 2006 its first full-length album called “No Memory Man”, where post-rock influences become more apparent, although the frequent use of ‘wall of sound’ suggests comparisons with the ‘shoegazing’ scene.

In spring 2007 the band went to Toronto in order to record its second full-length named “Doubleplusgood” and released through Planets of Sound in February 2009. But in the meantime, the band toured extensively in France and abroad, including South-East Asia from summer 2007 till 2009.

On the 25th of April 2014, five years after its last record, Utopium will surface again with a brand new-album, self-titled and also scheduled on vinyl this fall.

Quartet fondé en 1998 et composé de musiciens originaires de Russie, France et Mexique, Utopium est une formation indie-rock/post-rock à vocation internationale, basée entre Paris et Toronto qui fait ses débuts discographiques au printemps 2000 avec un EP enregistré à Londres. Un effort inaugural à sa sortie salué par la presse francophone qui compare alors le groupe aux Smashing Pumpkins ou My Bloody Valentine.

Un deuxième EP (2003) puis pas mal de concerts plus tard, Utopium livre avec “No Memory Man”, son premier album long-format qui lui aura demandé près de deux ans de travail et voit le groupe évoluer vers une musique flirtant avec les confins du post-rock en axant parallèlement son travail sur un son qui rappelle alors la mouvance shoegaze.

Paru en 2006, l’album permet au groupe de tourner massivement en France et à l’étranger (avec pour point d’orgue une tournée en Asie du Sud-est) puis de signer avec le label néerlandais Planet of Sounds, structure via laquelle sort en 2009 l’album “Doubleplusgood” enregistré à Toronto courant 2008. Au terme d’une tournée européenne couvrant une dizaine de pays, Utopium disparaît quelques temps de la circulation avant de refaire surface après un quasi hiatus de cinq années.
Entre-temps, le groupe a confectionné dans son coin un nouvel opus long-format et éponyme qui voit le jour au printemps 2014 en CD et digital, avant un pressage vinyle prévu pour l’automne de la même année
